Captain Zar'Rek
Gender: Male
Age: 23 (human years)
Race: Illithid
Nationality: Caverns beneath the Ash Lands
Appearance:
A tall, lanky creature, Zar'Rek is in peak condition, taking care of himself he has managed to keep a healthy physique. That is probably the only normal thing about him though, at least in the eyes of most locals. With deep violet, leathery skin, empty glowing eyes and a set of tentacles that hangs off his chin, the man is a sight to behold. While unique to most people above ground, he is actually a pretty average person to his kin. Belonging to an ancient yet rare group of creatures known as Illithids, he often gets mistaken for a land octopus. Zar'Rek can be pretty weird to look at, but after awhile you tend to get use to his moist looking flesh, and blank expressions. However it may take awhile to come to terms with his dangly mouth.
Personality:
Zar'Rek is an odd fellow, often jumping between personalities. Most people who come into contact with him think that he is a violent evil man, mostly because of his race and origin. In truth his family is pretty violent and has a distaste for people who live above ground, and every now and then this can come through in his way of speaking with people. But at his core, Zar'Rek is actually just a goofy guy that enjoys drinking, music and sailing. He can be pretty friendly in social situations, and rather enjoys the company of others. His bloodline does precede him though, and this can flare up, especially in combat. He does have a mean streak and an occasional act for violence, taking no mercy on those he deems his enemy.
History:
Born to a rather unsavory family, and race in general, Zar'Rek lived most of his life in the dark, damp caverns beneath the ash lands. His people had lived under ground for hundreds of years, not having the best relations with those who conquered on the surface. He was raised to think the surface was evil, that those who lived there were their enemies, and truthfully they had been. He was trained and raised to be apart of the colony, to live for the hive and to think as one, not as himself. This went on for most of his childhood. However like most teenagers, as he grew older, he began to explore, and venture to the surface as dares and pranks with friends. As this happened, time after time, he began to get closer and closer to the surface dwellers, explored their culture, watched their mannerisms, and learned that they were not much different. They had their flaws, like his own family, but they were of the same earth.
He began to question life, his family and their teachings. This caused him to branch out, explore more and learn the reality of the surface. He saw how misguided his family were, how strange the surface was, and decided he needed to learn more. After much consideration, he decided to leave, wanting to know the truth for himself. It was a long, strange transition, instantly getting shunned by locals. There was no place for his kind, and despite how hard he tried to fit in, it was nearly impossible. So he decided to go to sea, living amongst the sailors, who could care less about who he was. He fell in love with the sea, after all he had never seen or been near it, as underground water was normally stagnant and gross. So now he lives along the cross, hopping from ship to ship just trying to find a place in this strange new world.
