It was a terrible storm. The monsoon had blown in from the coast a few hours ago and resulted in a torrential downpour that soaked anyone caught in it down to the bone. Downright awful…but that was exactly what he wanted. For what cruel hearted soul would turn away a lone traveler seeking shelter until the storm passed?
On one of his previous excursions across Charon, Zarius had caught wind of a fascinating individual referred to as the Witch of Moonglade. A skilled potion maker living in a quirky home spanning a river just outside the town of Moonveil. A potion maker is a potion maker most days, but the rumors of this one struck a chord with the dark skinned tiefling. Not only had she gained quite the reputation herself, but she had connections in powerful political courts. An ally like that would be a worthwhile investment. He had to tread carefully though, making an enemy of a witch would certainly result in being poisoned or cursed.
The plan was simple: appear on her doorstep as a weary traveler seeking shelter from the storm, use the same old story he had grown accustomed to if she asked about his own work, and gently pry into her goals and allegiances. From there, well, who knows? It would depend on how chatty he can get her really, and if he could keep from raising any suspicion.
Should things run a foul, at least the storm would wash away any trace of him being there. That is assuming he would be able to escape the building. It was a risk to be certain. Getting caught here would be bad. Really bad. End of the line bad. The witch was said to apprentice under the Court Wizard after all.
The rain continues to pour down on his head as he makes his way up the slick stone stairs that lead up to the house overlooking the river which was threatening to overflow. He had considered using the river as part of his ruse, but then decided against it on the chance the witch was not home or was too busy to hear someone calling for help from outside. He also was not a fan of swimming to begin with.
At the top of the stairs, he steps up to the door and shakes water droplets from his hair. No time like the present. With a deep breath, he knocks on the door.

The rumors were conflicting, and most of the people from Moonglade he talked to scoffed at the idea the Witch was old, crooked and covered in warts. She was a half elf, they said, contrary to the rumors on Zeinav, that told him she was a hag. Guess he was about to find the truth now.
The slippery stone steps lead to a small balcony, where a few plants swayed under the weight of the rain. He could see there was light inside, and the faint noises of movement. When he knocked on the door, there was silence for a second, and then he heard soft, barefoot steps and the rustling of soft silk before the door opened in front of him. He got only a few seconds to take the image in: she was a half elf, no doubt. Very pleasant to the eyes, her lustrous black hair cascaded to her waist. In the comfort of her own house, she wore a simple, and yet rich, purple silk robe that exposed her shoulders. But it took only half a second for her to promptly speak up.
"By Ginma! What has Avasha brought to my doorstep now? Come! Let's get you out of this rain!"
She grabbed him by the chest of his vest, unceremoneously yanking him into her house without hearing a word from him first. The first thing he would notice was the warm, cozy feeling of a more or less chaotic living room. It was....... much larger than one could think possible, and also much fancier. From the marble, black and white chess floor, to the expensive couches and fur rug near the fireplace, it felt like entering the home of a noble lady. Except the walls were mostly lined with books and magic scrolls. Not only the walls but nearly every surface had at least one volume, as the books threatened to overtake the place.
Clearly, magic was in the air.
Upon slamming the door behind him, she turned to face him. This was one of those people who smiled with their eyes - and there was magic there too. Deep, dark blue eyes, speckled with stars, revolving in her irises like a nebula. Below them, a gentle smile took shape.
"Are tieflings all good looking? Or should I consider myself lucky? Don’t move a muscle, I'm gonna grab a towel for you. I'll want to hear your story."

It's true. The rumors he had heard far from these lands did make out the witch to be a hag, jars full of eyeballs and all the other imagery that comes with it. He tended to be skeptical of rumors, especially when details didn't add up. This witch was being trained by the Court Wizard after all, how grotesque could she be?
She was stunning to a point where she seemed out of place in the context of the situation. He was thrown off, both in regards to balance and expectations. He had been ready to introduce himself, explain the situation, ask for shelter. Well, that quickly went out the window as the half-elf grabbed his shirt and yanked him inside the building. He recomposed himself once inside, but before he could speak she was off looking for a towel. That was easy. And that unnerved him.
While she was out of sight, he glanced about the space. The interior was impressively large and the collection of books was astounding. The hours that could be spent here combing through the pages, it was an overwhelming thought. He was a little excited if he was being honest. It wasn't often he found himself in a place with such a wealth of knowledge. He breathes. Slow down. That can come later, if things go well that is. Business first, always.
"I apologize for disturbing you. This storm caught me off guard I am afraid." He says loud enough so that she could hear from wherever she had disappeared to. "You have my thanks for allowing me into your beautiful home. I can assure you I will not overstay my welcome and leave once the storm has passed."
He does as she asks and stays still as to not track water across the pristine floors. She seems friendly enough. Perhaps she is lonely or board and that is why she was so eager to pull a stranger into her home without even asking their name or what they were doing on her doorstep.

While she stepped to the side to find the towel, the tiefling would notice some movement to one side of the room, close to the fireplace. There was a small perch, the light reflecting an asorted collection of shinning objects, such as rings, coins and jewels. On top of it sat a raven, its feathers so black they shone glossy. Its small, beetle eyes inspected the newcommer with intent, without blinking.
But the woman was soon back with said towel. She promptly threw the towel on his head, gently patting to dry his face and hair.
"Don’t worry. The storms often bring travelers to my home this time of the year. I'll charge you a story for your stay. What’s your name? Let me help you with that."
She helped him release his satchel and left it on a small stand by the door. The warmth was certainly coming from her, her strong magic presence made known even for the inept in magic. It was at this point he might consider she was a bit........ too friendly. Obviously with not an ounce of shame in her body, she was too close for comfort, her hands wandering around his clothes under the pretense of drying him up. She felt something unusual.
Her hand ran up to the sides of his vest while she covered his head with the towel, which was odd, but on point: he could feel her delicate fingers trying to sneak into his hidden pockets and pulling out his knuckle knives, leaving them on the stand with his satchel. She was incredibly upfront about it, and didn’t seem to want to hide her actions at all, as if it was natural. She probably did that many times before. She shot a worried glance to his belt and the several small pouches, but she'd probably better not go so far.
"That looks enough. I assume you must be hungry. How about a bowl of hot stew? Wine or tea to go with it?"

Zarius gives a curious look at the raven perched a top its small horde of trinkets and treasures. How befitting a companion of someone called a witch. Ravens are highly intelligent creatures and this one certainly seems to be keeping a keen eye on him. He wouldn't be shocked if it started to talk.
He flinches slightly at the towel being thrown in his face, but ultimately doesn't withdraw or stop her as she dries him off. He is amused at her fussing. It reminded him of his mother, she would always fuss over him if he came back home with even the smallest abrasion.
"My name is Zarius. I appreciate the hospitality."
As she lifts his satchel and removes the strap from his shoulder, his body tenses and he peeks out from under the towel to see where she put it. Seeing it wasn't far and she hadn't opened it, he relaxes and lets her continue.
It did strike him as odd how comfortable she was with being that close to a complete stranger, then he felt her fingers fish the knuckle knives out of his pockets. Ah. He understood what she was up to now. This was a pat down disguised as being extra friendly. He smirks a bit, how clever of her.
He reaches up and pulls the towel off his head, getting behind his ears a bit more and smiling at her as if this wasn't weird at all. He notices her eyes glance down at his pouches with a worried look. Better to put her mind at ease. He unties the belt and casually uses the towel to wipe off the leather pouches. He then sets them on the side table with the rest of his things. The contents of the satchel were the only things he would be upset about losing anyway.
"Thank you. You are too kind." He towels off his boots as well before folding the towel up.
At the offer of food and drink, he pauses. On one hand, it would be rude to reject her offer. On the other hand, he knew she was a skilled potion maker. Considering her caution so far, he wouldn't put it past her to feed him a sleep potion or truth serum...or even just flat out poison him. If there was one thing he was paranoid about, it was being poisoned. Wouldn't be the first time someone attempted it.
"I appreciate the offer, but I do not wish to impose." He smiles.

"Nonsense! Come with me..."
The woman grabbed him by the hand, bringing him across the room and into her kitchen. Her kitchen was, as most witch's houses must be, the heart of the house. A big cauldron stirred something hot that smelled great, the big wooden spoon moving on its own. The counter to the right side was equipped with anything a regular kitchen should have: cleavers, knifes, pots and pans, a stove, and several spices and garlic hanging from the floor. The left side of the kitchen was far more interesting: the long counter was taken by an impressive array of alchemical glassware, some bubbling flasks and a big, sturdy and ominous cabinet, with several multicolored flasks sitting inside.
She invited him to seat on the table and went to fetch him a bowl of hot stew, taking a serving for herself. The raven he saw before came into the kitchen flying, landing right in front of the tiefling. The bird starred him for a moment, before rudely cawing at his face.
"CAWWW! Hello! Zarius!"
It was a fast learner, it would seem. The woman sat at the table before Zarius.
"My apologies, but most people that come here already know something about me. My name is Kamille. This is Mischief."
"CAW! Shinny?"

He let her lead him into the kitchen. She was bold and was probably most comfortable when she felt she had control over the situation. He would not deny her that comfort for the time being, but he would keep his guard up in case she had more malicious intentions.
The kitchen was just as impressive as the previous room despite being not nearly as large. It had a much cozier feel to it and the rich aromas were enticing to any who entered. His mother would approve and possibly would even be jealous of the fine cookware.
He wasn't too interested in the culinary arts though. It was the alchemical supplies at the back counter which intrigued him most. While he was itching to inquire about what she was capable of making, he knew better than to start that sort of talk too soon. There was an order to such things especially around nobility. Though this would be the first time he had a conversation with a noble lady who appeared so comfortable in her own skin as to not wear shoes and serve a stranger a meal herself.
On that note, he hadn't seen any servants or attendants. Was she alone in this place? The flutter of wings and squawk in his face indicated otherwise. He blinks at the bird which had already caught his name and chuckles a bit.
"Hello to you as well."
He looks at Kamille. "It is a pleasure to meet you Lady Kamille. And also to meet you, Mischief." He holds up a hand and slips a gold coin out of the long fingerless gloves that he wears to protect his hands and arms.
He offers the coin to the raven with a smile. "For your collection."
Glancing down at the bowl of stew, he still hesitates to eat. He had seen her serve herself form the same cauldron, but she could have slipped something in while Mischief was distracting him. She also could have some tolerance to the effects of her own potions or have lined the bowl pre-emptively. There was no guarantee the food was safe, and now that she had gone through the trouble of placing it before him. If he refused it, she may grow more suspicious of him.
He breathes and takes a spoonful of the hot savory smelling stew, carefully blowing on it a bit before eating it.

Either Zarius faked it well - or the woman was far too used to people distrusting her hand in a first moment that she didn't react to the tiefling's initial hesitation. And he would need to acknowledge it: the stew was delicious, a gentle warmth washing over him as he ate it. No weird bitter aftertaste, no unusual tingling of the tongue - just a common, hot, herbal meat stew. If it eased him a bit, she started to eat from her own bowl as well, sitting before him.
Mischief's eyes glinted at the coin, quickly taking it in his beak and jumping away, as if to avoid him pulling it back. He tested the coin, hitting it on the table. Then he did a little dance up and down, before flying off to add it to his collection.
"You don't need to address me as a Lady, if you don't want. I'm not a noble."
And yet, she behaved like one and her house certainly looked the part. Maybe it was her time at the Court. You can leave the Court, but Court does not leave you?
"It is not unusual for people to stop by this time of the year, like I said. All kinds of people stop by, most of them in need. For you, a weary traveler, I often charge just your story so far for my hospitality."
With her elbows on her table, she stopped eating for a moment so she could stare at him, with a wide grin that reached her eyes.
" So.... How is it that you arrived at my doorstep, handsome stranger? What is your purpose on this side of the world?"

The tension from Zarius' shoulders which he was not hiding as well, visibly releases when nothing seems wrong with the food. He admits, it is pretty good and a welcome treat after being soaked to the bone.
"I meant it out of respect, though I am surprised you are not a noble yourself. You live in such a lavish home and carry an air of practiced grace about you." He eats a few more bites of stew and then pauses when he notices her staring at him with that wide grin.
It was surreal being on the receiving end of this behavior. Did people feel this uncomfortable when he does the very same to them? He puts the spoon down and puts on a friendly smile.
"Actually, I did come here in hopes of making your acquaintance. I have heard of your skills in alchemy and I was hoping to see what kinds of potions you are capable of creating myself."
He pauses and considers what to say next. "I will admit, I did not expect to be caught in that storm on my travels and I also did not expect you to be so welcoming. The rumors about the Witch of Moonglade abroad are less than flattering, though the people of Moonglade seem to think of you more kindly."
"My apologies if it is rude to say, but I am very glad that the rumors of you being a hag are grossly inaccurate." He hopes this tidbit of information is amusing to her. While she was clearly cautious of strangers, she has remained good-natured so far.

Few people walked into her house with so much distrust. They were walking into her house, for Ginma's sake! If they trusted her enough for that......
Ah! So there it was... the ulterior motives. He wasn't a random traveler who got caught up in the rain, even though he tried to spin his story that way. He wanted to see what kinds of potions she could make? That part was telling........ And also confusing. He must want something specific, no? The tiefling could see a mix of emotions coming and going through her face, but most of all, she looked curious about this young man.
"I'm sorry, but that is incredibly unusual to me... What kinds of potions I can make, you say? And what would be your interest in this? Certainly mere curiosity is not what brought you out of your house, into the storm, to end up at my doorstep? Where are you from, by the way?"
Mischief came back to the table, and was going for Kamille's tea if she had not waved him away. Instead, he dunk his beak into Zarius' tea and started to drink it himself. When he mentioned the rumors about her being a hag, she chuckled soft - a laughter so light it seemed to soften the tension just a bit.
"I'm aware of the rumors, and I must say sometimes people are dissappointed that I'm not a child-eating, wart covered hag. Whoever started those rumors, certainly never met me. People at Moonglade know me. They know what I do. What I can do...... They know they can come up to me to have problems solved."

He's not too surprised to see the mix of emotions cross Kamille's face. What matters was if she would settle on the right one and with a curious look, he was satisfied.
"Is it? You said yourself that people come to you knowing that you can solve their problems. Judging by your impressive set up there, is it not logical to assume you have ways of solving those problems through your alchemical skills?" He gestures to the potion brewing supplies on the back table as he poses the rhetorical question.
"I do not have any specific interest at this time. I am more here just to do a precursory inquiry so that if the need were to arrive I know who best I should reach out to." That was true, this visit wasn't about leaving with anything more than just information and a connection.
"I am from the lands governed by the Zeinav Initiative." Also technically true as his home of the Ash Lands was considered within its sphere of influence, if only formally.
He wasn't entirely sure of her worldly knowledge, but it was best to assume she would recognize the kind of infamy the Ash Lands have. Best to keep that detail guarded for the time being if he wanted to continue this conversation.
Zarius looks at the bird with an bemused expression then turns back to Kamille.
"It is surprising that those rumors have spread as they have. I mean, it is both ridiculous and remarkable in a way considering your current and past connections to the Court." He chuckles.
It would be interesting to see how Kamille reacted to this information. While traveling through Moonglade to arrive here it did not seem that the locals knew Kamille's history. They seemed satisfied with just knowing who she was currently, but no one just appears out of nowhere without good reason. He was curious if she was hiding or had fled from the Courts. Considering the information on her stating she was still involved with the current Court Wizard, he had his doubts that either of those guesses held any amount of water.
If she was hiding from something or someone though, that was important information to know. Though he came here with the intention of forming some sort of business relationship, if her personal baggage would bring more trouble than it's worth he would have to reassess her value to his own goals. He was willing to take chances on many things, but the risks to rewards had to be calculated first.
"I can assure you that my interest in your skills is genuine. Such abilities are widely sought after and I am afraid it is challenging to find someone with some skills who is not already entangled in more complicated situations." He gets a thinking look on his face. "Ah, I apologize. I do not know what all you are already invested in aside from your charity here in Moonglade. I should not assume such things."

That was unexpected, but not entirely. She assumed sometime someone interested in her influence would show up. It happened at Court too. Most of the nobles and Court mages would have trouble handling matters that needed a little more tact and persuasion and she, for being younger, more approachable, charismatic and, of course, beautiful, was asked to handle such delicate issues from time to time.
"People often come to me with A problem, though. As far as I understand, that’s not your case. It feels like an awful lot of work to come here, under the storm, for some.... precursory inquiry."
She took a sip of her tea, buying herself some time to think. When he mentioned her background in the Court, a strange look took her face. The ever gentle blue eyes of the witch became sharp. This man knew something about her past, speaking vaguely of it - she wondered if he would try to prod her for the details, and how much details he already got. Zeinav, right? She got friends in Zeinav that could look into his story. Or she could settle things right there and then. After a minute of silence, she offered him a gentle smile.
"I think I understand what you mean. I can’t say I'm free of baggage, as you may as well know by now......... But I tried to cut down my losses."
Then, setting the cup of tea aside, she extended both of her hands over the table, in his direction.
"You will pardon this superstituous old witch, but I find it a good palm reading is good for assessing many things about someone.... Allow me?"
She was asking him..... to read his palm. Fitting for a witch, yet he could wonder how much good it did for her. Either she was really a superstitious lady, or there was something else at play there.
Mischief watched the scene unfold quietly.

Zarius' eyes narrow at the witch, then glance down at her outstretched hands.
A palm reading, huh? No, likely not. She was up to something. She had already shown that she was very careful around strangers. She is a powerful mage working under the Court Wizard and she had been around the Courts previously, taking those things into consideration there was no doubt in his mind that whatever she was up to would make her a problem if she decided to not cooperate.
Refusing would basically be an admittance to any suspicions she held about him, regardless of if her suspicions were correct or not. He scoffs a bit and smiles. She got him.
"I would hardly regard you as old, good lady Kamille. Of course, it would be an honor."
He sits back in his chair and starts removing the one of the long fingerless glove thingies that he wears to give himself at least a little protection from the elements and superficial abrasions. He wasn't one for armor as it only weighed him down.
Upon offer his hand --he would only offer one though in case he needed to defend himself-- Kamille can easily see the scars that decorate his forearms and hands. They're old. Mementos from his training before he had really gotten the knack for deflection. She can also tell immediately without needing to cast a spell that he is a trained fighter. The well defined muscles of his arms gives it away.
He watches her face closely as she takes his hand and the spell takes hold. The threads of her magic connect with him and draw out details of who he is, forming flashes of images and knowledge in Kamille's mind.
Kamille learns that his name is Zarius Rha'Oriyn. He is a male tiefling of 27 years. While his claim of being from the Zeinav Initiative is technically true, she gleans that he is specifically of the Ash Lands, having resided in Darkveil City for most of his life. She sees flashes of faces, other tieflings within his family circle. Beloved parents and precious siblings. She sees the late nights he spent training his body into a weapon; the work he has put in to become a spy, an infiltrator, an interrogator; and the creation of many cover stories, forged documents, and tenuous alliances. The Ashen Fathers. He had connections with them, both good and bad. As far as items on his person, the satchel contains the supplies necessary for his work: a number of notebooks, quills, ink, candles, loose pages, envelopes, and other mundane things.

Kamille leans over and pull his hand a bit more to the middle of the table. Her hands were much softer and warm compared to his rough and calloused hand - certainly the hands of someone who never held a weapon or never labored hard in her life. She was certainly a scholar, no more, no less.
Her fingers traced the lines on his palm, apparently thinking deeply, while her eyes wandered a little further up his elbow and arm. She felt his hand, his callouses and his scars.
"Hm..... Okay....... I see you are used to holding weapons... Lots of scars.... Old ones... so probably you trained or battled a lot in the past.... But, what is unusual, I'd say.... are the callouses here and here. We often see those in people who write quite a few bit.... Interesting combination..."
It was....... a lot more mumble jumble than she was used to, at least in her head. She was trying to divert from the fact she was in fact receiving more information than that, releasing some obvious bits that could be interpreted from analysing his hand. And yet, it wasn't the lines themselves she was analysing, but the small bits of information she could get from the hands itself.
Then, she let go of his hand, leaning back again. After a moment more of staring straight at him, she took her cup of tea again.
"What do you have to offer? You've come here under the prospect of forging an alliance or, at the very least, open a line of communication. It goes both ways. What do you offer me, and what do you have that is different from what my contacts at Zeinav already get me?"

Zarius chuckles. "Less about holding weapons and being one yourself. I am sure you can agree being someone with arcane talents rather than relying on steel." He pulls his hands back and returns her stare.
"That is a challenging question to answer. I do not know your contacts in Zeinav nor what they provide you in exchange for your services. To be honest, I am surprised to hear you have connections there already." He wasn't just surprised. He was worried. It was possible their rivals had already reached out to this woman. If that turned out to be the case, he was a mere fly caught up in her web.
He keeps his cool despite the doubts, and smiles at Kamille still as friendly as ever. "If it so suits you our dealings can be strictly transactional. Solar in exchange for solutions to our problems. I have ways of ensuring you can remain anonymous if you so choose."
Judging by her living arrangements, Solar probably wasn't of any interest to her. He still mentions it because of the flow of conversation, starting with the more low risk and reasonable offer first to see if she'd bite.
"Of course, this is all assuming you are even interested in Solar," he continues. "If not then perhaps we should discuss other methods of exchange that better suit you."
He gestures back at the alchemical supplies as he slips his glove back on. "I am certain you already have suppliers for your potion making, but I know there are some ingredients for such things that are much harder to come by using conventional methods. I work in the unconventional, if you require my skills, I would be happy to offer them."
It was risky to say too much himself. He figured she already did something more than just read his palm, but he couldn't be sure and to throw out an accusation of foul play would certainly turn the situation against him. Kamille was holding all the cards in this game they were playing. She hadn't reacted negatively towards him yet, so there was a chance she wouldn't act upon any of that leverage if he tread carefully.
