Leandros was never one to be too pompous and full of himself, but hunting a few bandits with bogskippers did seem some what low priority. Still...there were people in need and he promised his wife that he would take things slow as he eased back into adventuring. After the events of Vulcadreus, he couldn't blame her for worrying a bit more about the dangers out there. He had a habit of throwing himself halberd first into most issues. So, simple it would be for now. Byrr's hooves clacked against the slightly hardened mud. The Flood Road wasn't much of a real road, but it was better than wading through the swamp proper. The only downfall of his mount was mud and swamp could slow him down given his size and the size of the knight atop him. Leandros holds up a hand in greeting to the couple he saw along the road, slowing Byrr down to a hault. "Hello, are you the Fuiorn couple the Village Master told me about?" He smiles warmly. "He said you had been accosted by these Mud Worms?" The wife and husband nod, "Yes, we are heading back to our farm now, but its not much of a farm without those skippers.""No need to worry ma'am. I will ensure you are reunited soon, just please let me know any details you might remember."
Quest Name: Skip With Me Participants: Two or more Location: Marsh Flats Post Requirements: 5 posts per person, 200 words per post Reward: +1 Renown Description: The Marsh Flats have continued to suffer under the wrath of the Mud Worms, the gang quickly gaining more and more control of the region. Recently, they have begun to steal and hoard Bogskippers, valuing their usefulness for navigating the swamps. It is believed that with an army of Bogskippers, they can outfit their gang and become more of a problem. Lilicors is asking for help in freeing and retrieving the Bogskippers, returning them back to their owners. You are asked to find a Mud Worm camp and free any Bogskippers they may be holding there, dispatching of any the members who may try to stop you.

The soft pat of leather boots could be heard walking steadily through the hardened mud of the Flood Road. A young man wandered along, his brown, cloth pants tucked neatly into the tops of his leather boots. The sleeves of his white tunic were rolled up to his elbows and splotches of dried mud dotted his forearms and shoulders from brushing up against a muddy reed or a dirty signpost during his walk. Overtop his tunic was a steel cuirass and affixed to his leather belt was a plain scabbard that held a curved bladed dagger.
Running a hand through his messy brown hair, Ezra thought to himself, “What did that Village Master tell me again? … There should be someone who knows where the Mud Worms are down this road… or was it the one I past?”
Ezra stopped in his tracks at the thought and rotated his head and upper body to look backward from where he came. His messy hair moved left to right as he then shook the thought out of his head and turned back toward the road in front of him. Looking out into the distance on the road he could see a couple speaking to a man on horseback.
As he grew closer he could see that the man was clad in armor and sitting atop a black horse that was also lightly armored. He could see the man’s short blonde hair and the blue cape with the lions depicted on it. Could it be?
“A Knight?” Ezra quietly let the words escape his lips aloud. Being unable to contain his excitement, Ezra began to run toward the Knight and the couple he was speaking with; his face beaming with excitement. The pat of his boots made a wet, squishing sound as he ran along the muddy path. As he reached the trio he caught the ending of the conversation. He bent at the waist, placing his hands on his knees to catch his breath. After a brief moment he looked up with a bright smile on his face.
“Sir Knight. -Er… You are a Knight, right? … Of course you are; I apologize for my rudeness. – Er, Sir…” Ezra looked down as he nervously rambled the words, his voice trailed off at the end.

"Hm?" Leandros gently turned Byrr to face the young man. He gives a bright and warm smile, it's not hard to tell his youth just by the demeanor and equipment. Though its not far from what Leandros had looked like at that age, young and bright eyed with only the training armor he had.
"You're not being rude at all. Leandros Authurian of Capitol Landing. I am a knight, but don't feel the need to call me sir." He laughs gently as he swings a leg to dismount from the horse. It's a strangely deft maneuver for a fully armored person, but just a sign of the practice and training put into it.
On the ground, his height and size might seem intimidating, but the genial expression and outstretched hand for a handshake seemed to contradict it. He seemed to be actively making sure that he didn't loom over Ezra, trying to help him feel more at ease. For those that had heard of him, it was always odd at first just how kind and gentle someone nicknamed "The Lion of the Landing" could be.
"And your name young man? I imagine you're out this way looking after the Mud Worms as well? It seems we are of the same goal then if that's so."

As Leandros stood in front of Ezra, now dismounted from his steed, Ezra could feel the man's presence. The broadly shouldered, taller man struck an imposing figure to him, but he swallowed the nerves down and grasped his outstretched hand, giving it a firm shake.
"My name is Ezra. Ezra Windward Sir- Er..."
Ezra retracted his hand and shook his head; hoping to fling the nervousness from his mind. Leandros' warm smile helped him regain his composure and he collected himself and stood tall. He then said with deliberate confidence, "I'm Ezra Windward. I was sent this way to retrieve some Bogskippers from a gang known as the Mud Worms. That's correct."
Just then the woman, who was eyeing Ezra doubtfully, cleared her throat loudly to regain their attention before turning back toward Leandros and saying, "After those Mud Worms made off with our skippers, they sped off Northward, deeper into the Marsh. Must have reckoned no one would think to look for 'em out there. Rolyn," She gestured softly to the man standing beside her with a look of worry and concern on her face, "tried to stop them, but they attacked him! Nearly lost his eye!"
The man, Rolyn, turned his head to show a healing slash mark on the left side of his head in front of his ear. The cut extended about five inches and started near the top of his ear, ending in the middle of his cheek. It looked to be moderately deep.
A sinking feeling grew in the pit of Ezra's stomach as he saw the cut on the man's face. This was the type of adventure he had dreamed of, but was he ready to face off against a gang of violent thugs? He thought of his home for the briefest of moments. How his mother would be so proud of him when she heard he defended the helpless farmers from the ruthless criminals. "Be brave. This is what you asked for." He thought to himself. Fearing that his self-doubt managed to creep it's way into his appearance, Ezra straightened up again and adjusted the dagger on his belt. He wore a look of steeled determination on his face as the woman told her story.

Somehow Leandros' face finds a way to brighten more when Ezra is taken with his sudden confidence. It is short lived though as the couple in need return to the conversation. A small frown pulled at the corners of his mouth as he looked at the wound.
"If I may?" He extends out a hand to put on the man's shoulder before a dull light pulses from his hand.[1] The wound slowly closes, a faint scar left behind but no longer raw and ragged.
"Here, take Byrr back to town, we can track the bandits." There is a polite refusal and insistence back and forth before the couple is eventually helped onto the horse's back. "Ensure their safety Byrr, I'm trusting you."
He smiles as he pats the horse's flank before he trots off. Leandros watches Byrr leave a moment before turning to face the direction she said the bandits went. The knight starts off down the path motioning for Ezra to follow.
"Let us make haste to the bandits. I would hate to hear of another family taken advantage of...these Mud Worms seem bold enough, who knows how'd they'd get if they actually pull their scheme off."

Ezra watched in amazement at Leandros healing the man and then offered his horse to lead the couple back into town. "This," He thought, "Is what being a Knight is about. Helping people."
Ezra shook his head in agreement with Leandros and the two set off down the path. As they walked, Ezra began to think about what was happening. He was out on the road, living the adventure he had dreamt of for so long. Yet, it was not purely excitement welling in his gut; there was a deep uneasiness. Was he truly skilled enough to go toe to toe with gang members? Would his few sessions of private blade lessons stack up to the skills of hardened criminals when the time came? Would he truly have what it takes to impress the Knight, Leandros?
Nervously, Ezra's gaze fell mostly downward as the two walked along the path. With the many doubtful thoughts floating through his head, Ezra checked the straps on his cuirass to ensure it was properly affixed and not loose. He reached down with his left hand to where his dagger was and fidgeted with it using his thumb, checking to ensure it was not stuck in the sheath and that it would easily be drawn when it was needed.
A look of worry shown obviously on his face and he remained quite as they continued their walk into danger.

"Now we just have to hope he doesn't wander off in search of grass while he waits for us to return." He smiled, pleased with his own joke.
There is certainly a difference in confidence between the two as they walk. Leandros is certain of every step, there is no wavering or doubt in the direction he is headed. His head is held up and gaze forward as they slog through the mud. He was never one to be taken by nicknames or titles, but he was fond of being the Lion of the Landing so he tried to carry himself with that pride as often as possible.
He did catch Ezra's more subdued expression from the corner of his eyes. How young was this man? Was this his first adventure outside home? Leandros imagined that he probably looked much the same during his first outing, nervous about putting all that training to use and if it would even be of any use. It's one thing to learn the proper form and all the rules of combat, it's another to have a man in your face trying to take you down.
"How long have you been training? You seem comfortable in your gear, adjusting to the weight of it all can be the hardest part." Leandros smiles again as he taps his own breastplate, the heavy armor covering everything but his head.

Ezra was snapped out of his thoughts by the sound of Leandros' voice and his head jolted upward.
"I've... been training for about a year." Ezra replied doubtfully. This Knight must think that such a trivial amount of time. How many adventures had this man been on? How many people had he fought and how many had been saved because of his actions?
"The gear was a gift from my mother." A smile managed its way onto his face as he reached up with a hand to touch the cuirass on his chest. "She made sure I had everything I needed to start working toward my dream." Ezra looked up toward Leandros. He noticed how he walked with such confidence. His head forward and chin held high. His posture made him appear towering and intimidating, yet the smile on his face was warm and inviting. The visage made Ezra straighten up a little taller as he walked. "As long as I'm with Leandros, I don't think anyone can do us harm." He thought to himself. The thought itself gave him a modicum of confidence.
"How long have you been a Knight for Sir Leandros? And what did it take to get there?" The question had been burning inside of him, and he had never been face to face with a Knight for long enough to actually ask the question. As he asked it, a feeling of excited anticipation welled up inside him for the answer. A grin still shown on his face as he looked to Leandros as a fan looks when they've finally met their hero. "I have so many questions." he added excitedly.

“I suppose since birth might be the easiest answer.” Leandros gives a warm chuckle. “I am privileged to born into a wealthy family, so I was afforded the chance to get a formal education as well as learning about fighting and warfare. I’ve been with Byrr since he was a colt and hand raised him myself.”
As they walk he takes another quick glance at the equipment. It looks well made, chosen with care to be certain. He’d seen enough young adventurers at the academy or on the road that carried whatever they could grab. Ill-fitting armor and mismatched equipment, which it was hard to judge when he came from money. He was given the money for this set of armor he wore. Of all his equipment, the dragon leather cloak on his back might be the first thing he truly got on his own.
He gives a thoughtful look as Ezra asks what it took to be a knight. A heavy question indeed and it’s clear by his expression that Leandros wants to be careful with his words.
”Any knight will give you a different answer I imagine, of course knowing how to fight and defend yourself is a part of it, but for me?” He pauses. “For me I suppose I believe it takes conviction that many who carry the title don’t have. Many forget to use their position to help and instead focus on enriching themselves.”

Ezra listened carefully and intently as Leandros answered his question. He could not contain the smile that stretched across his face as the last sentence of Leandros' answer was said, "Many forget to use their position to help and instead focus on enriching themselves."
"I knew it!" Ezra said excitedly aloud, "Of course, being a Knight involves helping others."
The conversation filled Ezra with renewed confidence and excitement about the decision to head out on this adventure. "I met another Knight once." Ezra uttered, no longer looking at Leandros, but at the road ahead of them. His eyes stared ahead onto the road, but he was lost in a memory. "I was young. Younger than I am now..." He let out a short chuckle, "I was in Sol City with my mother and father. There were some criminals bullying this trader and the most noble Knight I've ever seen rescued him. She had shining armor long, red, braided hair. Her shield had a symbol of an eagle on it." Ezra snapped from his memory and turned to look at Leandros again with admiration in his eyes before continuing, "She ended the conflict without even drawing her sword. She was able to protect that man just by being there. That's what I want.... To be a hero like that. To be a Knight."
The slightest hint of embarrassment washed over Ezra and he looked back out onto the road instead of at Leandros. He lowered his head and shook it back and forth, letting out a short sigh, "I must sound like a child to you. I assure you, I know that it will take work; and I'm willing to put it in." The determined tone of Ezra's voice made it hard to determine if he was trying to convince Leandros or himself that this statement was true.
Just then Ezra slowed to a stop. Not far out ahead of the two, just off the road were a set of obvious tracks heading off in the direction the man had pointed them in earlier.

"She sounds like an admirable woman, it's good you were able to see that in person. Too often do people turn to violence as the easy answer, but more often than not it isn't the best answer...These bandits up ahead will prove that. You might think just wiping them out is the answer and it's true...they did harm innocent people and likely mean to do more harm, but why? A small band like this is usually made of people who are just desperate and turn to illicit means to take care of themselves. Killing criminals and bandits doesn't solve the issues causing people to turn to banditry."
He smiles a bit as he sees Ezra hang his head, reaching over to pat the young upcoming knight on the shoulder, "It's not childish to want to help. Stick to those ideals and you'll surpass her and I in no time."
It was about that time Leandros noticed the footsteps as well. The path led them through a thicket in the woods, tight with bramble and bushes. An easy place to hide traps, but how much time would they have had to set anything up when stealing livestock? In any case, they were closing in on the bandits. It was time to see what young Ezra had in him.
"Would you like to lead or should I?" He was more than willing to give the man a chance at taking point. Leandros wouldn't be far behind if there was trouble, but any small chance to build that confidence and let him have a victory to hold on to was a good thing.

Ezra listened and took Leandros’ words to heart as he explained that violence was not always the answer. There was a wisdom in his words that Ezra had yet to truly appreciate. He had lived a sheltered life prior to setting out on his adventure. How could he truly know the kind of hardship that might turn a man to banditry? He had never known the struggle of not knowing where his next meal came from, or being unable to afford medicine for a sick loved one. Ezra had not known real adversity in his life. At least not yet.
Leandros’ reassuring words and pat on the shoulder made Ezra feel more at ease. He relaxed slightly until he was finally asked, “Would you like to lead or should I?”
A knot grew in Ezra’s throat and a sharp, nervous pain grew in the pit of his stomach as he answered, “I- I’ll lead…” The words came out in an unsure tone and the look on his face revealed his nervousness. Yet Ezra pushed forward past Leandros, into the thicket.
As he pushed forward cold beads of sweat began to form on his brow, eventually rolling down his face. He put forth much effort into trying to remain silent as he pushed ferns and greenery out of his way, moving forward. He continued forward until he could eventually hear the gravely sound of a man’s voice. He couldn’t hear exactly what the man was saying, but he sounded rugged and rough.
Ezra pushed himself further so that he could make out what the man was saying, still continuing his efforts to remain silent. He paid attention to every leaf on the ground, every branch that he gingerly moved out of his path. He took care to ensure the dagger on his belt did not clang against the steel cuirass on his body and that his breathing was shallow enough to not be heard. Trying to keep track of all these things and yet still move forward, his focus split between each task, yet trying to complete them all at once. It was by far more than he was used to.
Crack…
Betrayed by a branch on the ground, Ezra stepped and broke the branch in two. He could hear clearly now in that same rough, gravely voice, “Ey, shut up ya idiots. You hear that?”
Another voice, more dopey sounding and deeper replied, “I heard it Rob. From over there!”
Ezra could hear footsteps closing in on him, getting closer to his location. His heart began to pound out of his chest. He could not discern how many men by the sound of the footsteps alone. His mind was racing on what the best move to make was, but no thoughts came to his rescue.
A large hand reached into the thicket from the direction that Ezra had heard the voices coming from. It grabbed him firmly by the top of his armor, pulling him off his feet and into the clearing. Ezra lost his balance and fell down onto the ground. He looked up at the towering man that had pulled him from inside the brush. He stood at a staggeringly tall height and was built very large and muscular. He’d call it the look of a body-builder if it weren’t for the protruding gut on the man. Rough stubble dotted the chin of this man’s oval-shaped face. A large brow seemed to extend just a little too far underneath a smattering of straight, dark brown hair. He turned to a much smaller man and stated, “You was right Rob. This youngin’ was spyin’ on us!”
The man identified as Rob was much smaller than the first. Although tall in his own right, his figure was more athletic in build. He wore a thick mustache under his curved nose. His long black hair was parted down the middle and came down to just below the bottom of his ears. The darkness of his hair and eyebrows made his crystal blue eyes appear vibrant and bright.
Ezra regained enough composure to look around him. There were four men altogether. They all appeared lightly armored and equipped based on what he could see. There, beyond the men; he could see at least two Bogskippers. The goal of his quest was in sight, he just needed to find a way to deal with these men…

Leandros nodded and let the young man go ahead first before following after. It wasn't exactly easy to be quiet given all of his armor and general size, but he attempts nonetheless. He kept an eye on the surroundings just to make sure they weren't wandering into something they couldn't handle. The last thing he needed was to wander into a tougher than expected fight and see Ezra hurt.
He was confident in Ezra's ability and then the branch snapped. It happens, but the real test now would be how does he respond. Waiting it out is not a bad option, see if they pass by and hopefully recover. But unfortunately the voices get closer not further away and suddenly Ezra is yanked from the brush.
Well now what? Stepping in would undoubtedly save Ezra, but it could also crater his confidence in being able to handle things. Despite his instincts to protect others, Leandros holds a moment to give Ezra a chance to retake the situtation. He does take his halberd from its sheath and readies to strike in case it is needed.
He could be ready and strike in a moment should they so much as raise a weapon to the young man. Leandros would also be ready to heal him should that be necessary.

“Now what do we have here?” Said the mustached man with the gravelly voice, “You should know better than to wander around the Flood Roads… Lots go missing out here.” He continued in a threatening tone.
The large man showed a mostly toothless grin as he stood behind Rob with his arms crossed. Ezra noticed that there was a halfling woman sitting on a tree stump watching the interaction as well. She had short, curly dirty-blonde hair and wore tight-fitting leather. There was a light dusting of freckles atop her button nose. She watched with an amused look on her face as she flipped a dagger into the air and caught it by the handle again. Standing with his back to a tree was a dwarven man with long auburn hair that came down past his shoulders. His long, braided beard had stripes of gray in it and the wrinkles on his face revealed him to be older than the others. His face remained stoic and his arms crossed. A large battleaxe leaned against the tree beside him with the blade on the ground.
Ezra was slowly able to rise to his feet. He could feel his knees buckle beneath him and the nervousness wrenched his gut. Fighting past this he said, “I-I-I’m here to… collect the uh.. Bogskippers.” Ezra’s voice was shaky and unsure.
The mustached man name Rob turned to the large man and they shared a hearty laugh. “There’s nothing to collect. Go back home kid.”
As Ezra opened his mouth to speak, the dwarf spoke up from behind the group. His voice was deep and slow, “Before you get hurt.”
Ezra thought back to what Leandros told him. Not every problem needed to be solved with violence. Not every bandit was evil and it was sometimes better to face the root of the problem, rather than eliminate the problem itself. Ezra summoned every bit of confidence and bravery within him and spoke, “Wh-What was it? Er- I mean to say… Why are you bandits?”
It was hard for Ezra to organize his thoughts. The question had not come out clear. His nerves were getting the better of him. What’s the reason you feel the need to stoop to banditry? What happened in your life to turn you to such desperateness? What is it that I can do for you to turn you away from this wretched life? All would have been suitable questions for Ezra to ask, yet these were not the questions that came to mind.
The smile quickly disappeared from Rob and the large man’s face and they immediately turned to look at each other. There was a moment of silence as none of the four bandits spoke. Until all at once they laughed in unison.
“Why am I a bandit?” Rob managed to let out between chuckles.
“Hey Pip, why are you a bandit, huh?” He called out with a wide grin as he turned toward the halfling woman and pointed. A sideways grin was on her face as she simply shook her head. “Altmier? What about you gramps, why are you a bandit?” He then called out to the dwarf near the tree. The old dwarf still had not broken a smile and only continued to glare toward Ezra and the others. “Olf, my friend, why- are you- a bandit?” Rob slung his arm around the large man’s neck as he jokingly asked the question.
The large man, now identified as Olf answered in the same dopey, slow voice, “I dunno Rob. Maybe I-”
He was interrupted by Altmier, the dwarf, “Stop toyin’ with the boy you two.” His face remained as grim as when Ezra first saw him. “We’re too close to home an’ he can lead others here. End this now and let’s be done with it.”
“End this now and let’s be done with it.” The dwarf’s deep voice rang in Ezra’s head. “End this now…” A shiver ran down his spine and cold sweat began dripping down his back. The two men stopped laughing and Rob drew the shortsword at his side. “Get your weapon!” Ezra thought, but his body would not comply. A look of terror showed clearly on Ezra’s face as Rob took a step closer. “Run!” Ezra thought to himself, but he was frozen. Unable to act or move, his knees began to shake weakly. Rob’s eyes met Ezra’s and he could feel a lump in his throat.
“Sorry kid.” Rob said with his raspy voice; his tone was genuine. He raised the shortsword above his head, ready to strike Ezra down.

Before the weapon that was now raised could swing down, there was a blinding flash of light.[1] When the light cleared, the bandits hand was burned by holy light and he stumbled back dropping the sword and clutching his wrist.
"You've done enough harm today, set the bogskippers free and surrender yourselves." Leandros came out from the brush, quickly moving to step in front of Ezra.
The bandits look among themselves nervously, except for Altmier. The kid would've been easy to pick on, but this guy not so much they thought. Rob couldn't grab his sword anymore, but his hand did start to move towards the crossbow at his hip.
Leandros flourishes his halberd to point the tip at the man's chest stopping him solid in his tracks. Rob did not seem so keen on being on the other end of a blade now.
"I would not move again unless you plan to surrender your weapons."
"We don't. We plan on killin you, the kid, then whoever we feel like once we rip apart these little skippers and get some proper armor."
"You should've done that before we arrived then." With much more speed than would be expected of such a large weapon, Leandros shifts the halberd in his hand as he swings hard.
The hammer end of the weapon cracks into Rob's side, breaking a few ribs and sending him crashing to the side.[2] Olaf and Altmier fire their crossbows, but the knight ducks behind his tower shield.[3] The bolts embed themselves into the wood and metal.
"Are you all right Ezra? If you can take the other, I can handle the leader. You did well, it's time to finish this." Even under the firing of bolts he keeps a gentle smile on his face, continuing to try and reassure the young man. This likely isn't going the way he thought, but Leandros thought it wasn't a disaster. The young man stayed firm and that was something to be proud of.
