For Mephis it almost felt weird to have someone listen to him as intently as Javal was, don't get him wrong he loves to hear himself talk. Though he always tried to avoid this subject matter all together and to have someone absorbing as much as he could made the fellblood weary at first. However there was just something about the sincerity and genuine concern from Javal that disarmed the normally sharp-witted Mephis. The reaction to seeing his dented horns drove the point home that he somehow cared for his wellbelling despite only meeting him not even a couple hours ago.
Then for once in many years a warm smile sneaked through as he was asked about Dante, "well Dante was one of the kindest men I had even met in my entire life and ... he was supposed to be the first person that I was to take care of. He owned my father money and hadn't paid in a long while so I was sent as a test of loyalty to the Ferideh family, and I just couldn't bring himself to end him. Thus was the first time I went home empty handed and you can see how my father felt about that." Motioning up to his malformed horns, then he seemed to be taken off guard when Javal mentioned understanding his killings. He leaned forward to inspect his face as he said it to make sure he actually meant what he said, "wait you understand? I have so much blood on my hands you can just brush that under the rug, How can you do that?"
His confusion soon washed away as he felt a small warmth at Javal's want to help him "I left my family after I botched a job bad enough that I knew that I could not return and live in the same house. I don't remember much details of the job itself but I do remember my brother ending up dead and Dante bleeding out. I helped Dante escape from the area but he couldn't make it in the end." He seemed to deflate at a memory of that day flashes in his head.

Javal placed his hands on the edges of the crate he sat on eagerly continuing to listen, admiring how cool this Dante fellow seemed from how Mephis detailed it.
He then smiles it is similar to his own experience with having his male role model being his former captain.
“This Dante fellow you speak of seems so honorable I’m saddened that I won’t get the pleasure of meeting him someday. How did he originally fall into ways of owing your father money I wonder? Although it’s good to hear that he was able to leave an imprint of justice upon your soul and continue to carry on his memory..
He then says cheerily responding to Mephis questioning, “Although I don’t like senseless killing and assassination myself and am heavily opposed to it personally. In your case, I don't hold it against you. It seems you were caught up in an unfortunate situation where you didn’t have any other choice. Sure, you can’t erase the past. That's true, I agree but something like that shouldn’t affect your future, my friend. You can always make a choice. You can choose to be a better person, a nice person, not an evil one, not a killer anymore”.

Mephis lets his shoulders relax at Javal's words and is left speechless as he can't seem to detect any mistruth or ill will coming from the man across from him. He had never felt so vulnerable as the truth poured out to this almost stranger, and his surprise, he wasn't afraid. Mephis' hand hadn't curled around the leather of his dagger, and he wasn't stalling to plan an escape route, and a new feeling had taken refuge in his horned head: safety.
Before he spoke back up, he reached down to the gold plates that rested beside him and carefully inserted them back onto the ends of his horns. The small, warm smile reappears on his face. "From what I could gather on him, Dante wasn't a man of honor or justice, but he was kinder than he had any right to be. He knew my father sent me to kill him both times, but he showed no fear each time I showed up and instead welcomed me into his home. He even cooked for me ... Can you imagine how crazy it is to cook a meal for someone sent for your head." He let the absurdity of that hang in the air as he paused. He mainly stopped because if he kept talking about Dante, tears would start flowing, and he already felt vulnerable enough.
The warm smile faded away as Mephis thought of the future ahead; he wasn't sure if he even had one past this. "Javal, I don't know if I can redeem myself ... I have dozens of deaths on my shoulders. I remember every face and every name of the people I had taken care of when I still went by Mephis. I know that I am scum and will remain scum for what these hands have done to innocent people ... I don't think people like me have a choice to be better." He spiraled as he stared down at his hands.

Javal placed his hands behind him on the crate as he heard more about this Dante fellow, “That raises even more of the question of who this Dante guy was. For a person to not only defend himself against a would-be assassin but cook for them, takes a whole other level of patience and kindness. Although I consider myself to be a valiant hero of justice I don’t think I’d approach an assassin with the same mindset I’d probably beat them up at least except if it were a child”.
Javal quickly went into his jacket pocket, took out a purple handkerchief, and handed it to Mephis use. He was glad that the other fellblood felt emotionally trustful towards him enough to trust Javal to see him in his most vulnerable moment.
Javal’s eyes turned from understanding to determined as Mephis resigned himself to his fate of wickedness and spoke with a serious and firm tone, “Mephis, redemption is always available for those who seek out my friend. No matter how many people you have killed, how many crimes you have committed, no matter how many lies you have told, you always have a choice to be a better person and leave that behind you. I’m not asking you to forget your past as Mephis friend. What's done is done and what you did happened but I ask you to look forward as Dante looks at what you can do to change yourself. A scum person wouldn’t feel bad, a scum person wouldn’t realize what they’re doing, and a scum person would be someone like Lucien. Now tell my friend, what do you call someone who has self-awareness and can improve themselves to be a better person? I call that someone on the path of redemption and on the path of being a hero, you can always change friends, no matter what you do you have a choice”.

Mephis looked down at the offered handkerchief, the deep purple reminding him of nights he spent lost in the shadows. Hesitant, he finally accepted it, acknowledging the symbolic gesture of trust. He wiped away the remnants of his tears, grateful for Javal's understanding, even in the face of his darkest truths. As Javal spoke, Mephis listened attentively, his crimson eyes focused on the ground as if searching for answers in the cobblestones beneath his feet. The weight of his past actions bore heavily on his conscience, each word from Javal sinking into his heart. The notion of redemption, the possibility of change, felt like an unattainable dream. "Javal, you are a beacon of light in a world shrouded in shadows," Mephis finally responded, his voice laced with vulnerability. "I never thought anyone would see past the monster I've become." He fell silent for a few seconds, allowing Javal's words to resonate within him. Could he truly change? Was redemption within his reach? The thought lingered in his mind, a glimmer of hope flickering amidst the darkness that clouded his soul.
With newfound determination, Mephis looked up at Javal. "You've given me something to think about, a chance I never thought I'd have," he admitted. "Maybe... just maybe, there's a sliver of light left in this wretched existence." Mephis stood up and gave his companion a bow, gratitude in his eyes. With a nod, he turned away, preparing to face the uncertain future that lay ahead. He found an old wooden crate, propelling himself onto it swiftly. From there, he effortlessly scaled the alley's walls, his movements fluid and agile. He looked down to the purple fellblood below, "Till we meet again javal Zarrus" he stated before slinking further away.
For the first time in a long time, Mephis considered the possibility that he could carve a new path for himself. The journey to redemption wouldn't be easy, but with the support and belief of a newfound friend, he felt a glimmer of hope that perhaps, just perhaps, he could be more than the monster he had become.

Javal smiled brightly as he faced Mephis, seeing the look in his eyes it seemed that he was able to shine a light on his new friend’s dark future.
Javal raises his hands shrugging, “Thank you my friend but it is not the beacons that shine the brightness for it is the bright fire that shines in the shadows such as you. You’ve lived a life of darkness and cruelty but I believe that the fire in your spirit will show through and allow you to vault your life trajectory to wherever you’d like to go. You’re not a monster anymore my friend, all that you are is a person, a person makes mistakes all the time there’s no need to look at them so hard to the point you can’t look forward".
“I’m glad to have been able to let you see reason in yourself, there is always light around you my friend you just have to let that spark of life into you”, the fellblood said as he stood up to his full height bowing as Mephis did.
He looked above as his friend left scaling the walls and shouting cupping his hands over his mouth to increase the volume of his voice, “I look forward to the day friend Mephis, may thee have light wherever you go and never forget it is you that makes your life what it is not your past, not people, just you”.
The fellblood then sat back on the crate looking at the sky thinking about his meeting with Mephis although he tried to inform the fellblood that people could do as they’d like he was beginning to doubt his course of life. He had so many things he needed to do but was scared deep inside that he didn’t have the will to do it.
