Koryn smiled happily as he began his quest with the stranger who would be joining him on the quest. He glanced over to the other as they walked "I'm sure this is gonna be a great adventure! What's your name by the way?" he asked tilting his head, his fishlike tail swaying behind him some as he looked back towards the stranger while they walked. He was definitely new to the whole experience as most could tell by the way he acted but he was decently built and overly willing to help at least.
He looked around at the beautiful lit up woods with a look of amazement "Wow....This is such a beautiful place! I didn't know a forest could look like this" he remarked as they walked taking it all in with a bright and gentle smile. He was quite the friendly and trusting fellow after all and was just excited for what lies ahead. He looked to where some of the plants were obviously missing and he tilted his head looking at the area "Man they did take a good bit huh?" he questioned looking at it all a bit surprised by just how much was actually gone

For most of the walk together so far, Fish had remained entirely silent. They were still somewhat processing being named Fish and working with an actual fish. This was not something they had ever considered happening and thus was not something they had mentally prepared for.
Fish shakes their head and looks up to Koryn when they ask. The taller of the two would see the kenku give a few simple hand signs, but seeing that Koryn didn't know their specific version of sign language Fish would shake their head. A few beats pass as Fish looks in their pack, producing a piece of chalk and slate.
FISH. They point at the board, then themselves, then the board, then themselves to sell the point that Fish was in fact Fish's name.
The bite marks on the plants do draw Fish's eyes, beady little eyes inspecting the plants. Normally, they wouldn't be interested in something as mundane and unlikely to turn a profit as hunting bugs, but unfortunately for the bugs they were nipping at Fish's alchemical needs. This was far beyond what normal insect damage would be which meant there wasn't enough coin to be made collecting plants. Less coin was enough to incense the bird. They look up to Koryn with a firm nod, they did indeed take a good bit.

"Fish? Fish... Oh okay! Well it's nice to meet you fish! I'm Koryn!" he replied happily to the other as they went on. It was nice to break the silence even if it technically was still silent but the communication was good. "If they take it all it will be harder to find something even close enough for alchemy and such" he added a bit worried as he was also an alchemist even though his carefree and mindless attitude would give off a different impression He touched one of the leaves examining the bite marks and frowned "Insects? They have never attacked these plants much before... I wonder what has caused the change" he remarked before standing again thinking about the situation "And the rate seems to be accelerating according to what others have said on all of this" he thought aloud as he tried to think of what they could do to solve such a situation if this was the case as bugs couldn't really be reasoned with or anything of that nature. "Do you have any ideas fish?" he asked looking to the other to see if he knew any ways to fix the situation curiously

"The viscera of certain bugs and insects can also make for good alchemical agents." They sign.....pausing again as they remember the communication barrier. The chalk and slate is again retrieved, "Bugs can work in potions too."
Maybe the word they meant was poison, but no sense in sharing their less agreeable hobbies around new people. They crow hop through the woods, taking out a little notebook to sketch the plants, bugs, and bite marks. Fish eyes up every little detail they can not only for the current job, but future reference as well. They occasionally look back to Koryn to visual confirm he is still near by, it might not be a typical working relationship, Fish at the very least wasn't going to just abandon him.
After a blink, Fish once again pulls out the chalk and slate offering a one word suggestion. INFESTATION. The voracity and speed with which the plants seem to be getting eaten likely meant they were dealing with an invasive species, something this ecosystem wasn't ready for and is now suffering the consequences.
Fish glances around the area they are currently in. "A hive must be close by." This was Fish's best guess of the situation at the very least.

“Yes but if they are eating all of another useful ingredient it can make things difficult without proper substitution” he worried a bit after reading the sign looking at the situation. He looked around staying in eye sight before coming up behind the other to see what he was doing “wow… you’re really good at sketching” he remarked amazed, a look of awe on his features.
“Infestation?” He questioned looking at the board and thinking before seeing him write about the hive “true. Should we try and relocate them, make them leave or get rid of them? I’m sure alchemy could be used to relocate them or exterminate them depending on what we want to do.” He remarked leaving options open for whatever fish was more comfortable with doing as he knew some people were opposed to extermination and the likes as he himself wasn’t overly fond of it

"Fish likes to document for continuing research." It was a rare moment, but this was a brief glance into what could be considered a hobby for Fish. They liked nature drawing and these kinds of studies. Koryn had unwittingly noticed a miracle, Fish stopped thinking about work for a second.
They quietly look at a few more of the plants, a little taloned finger tracing over the damage and feeling the edges. Good news was it didn't feel like this was some sort of incredible mutated bug that had razor sharp teeth tearing through the leaves. Though the simple fact that Fish can feel the dental impressions of an insect is terrifying, they shouldn't be this big.
"Extermination is the best option. Relocation for insects is difficult as often there are too many of them to effectively move the species and depending on the nature of their egg laying, mistakes can be made. Killing off the invasive species entirely is better for the ecosystem as a whole." Every so often, Fish has to wipe clean the slate and begin the next sentence. Fish would need to work on creating a sign language pamphlet to hand out to future associates because this is wildly ineffective. Admittedly though, Fish was not as annoyed with Koryn as they could be. He seemed to be much more intelligent than other people he had worked with and was one of the few to not treat Fish like a child immediately.

“I see well you’re doing amazing at it!” He remarked with a bright and friendly smile. He loved seeing others talents and passions so much so he was quite happy seeing the others skill as he read what the other wrote “alright then! So we need a toxin that will only harm the invasive species without harming the actual ecosystem that is here… there are a few strong alchemical solutions that could do the trick but narrowing such things down to only harm one specific species is a bit more difficult to do…” he commented as he looked around whilst he thought about it all wondering what to do that would be effective
He soon looked back to the other tilting his head curiously “do you have any suggestions or ideas fish?” He asked wanting to know what the other was thinking as he wanted to make sure the other could chip in and say their piece to help figure this out. He was always one to try and work his best with others and make sure they were included as others often had good ideas and working together made everything easier and far better than both trying to do their own separate things

"To formulate anything like that we would first need to know what kind of creatures are doing this." Fish gives them a moment to read Fish's thoughts before hopping further into the woods.
As they explored the woods it became clearer and clearer whatever they were facing as going to be difficult to remove. Just based on the damage alone there was a lot of whatever they were looking for. Further into the woods they can hear the chewing getting louder and closer, they had to be nearing whatever was causing the problem.
Fish holds a finger up towards Koryn letting him know to be quiet and slow down. They point forward to the grove up ahead. They can see oversized catepillar like creatures munching on plants, all of the plants. Each one is about the size of a well-fed house cat and they seem to be everywhere. There was going to be no easy solution to this.
"Fish does not believe there is a good option. It would take a lot of pesticide to scare these away....Does Koryn have any way to startle them? Maybe if they leave for a night, Fish could have the time to make something.....Better than killing everything."

Koryn read the note and nodded following with a curious look "Right then sounds good!" he followed after the other with a kind and caring smile. His, ears flicked towards the sound of the chewing, his tail going still as he heard the chewing going louder surprised by just how loud it seemed to be and how much damage ha been done
Seeing the others gesture Koryn was confused a moment but soon slowed to a stop remaining silent as the other requested, his gaze returning to the source of all the noise with a small grimace at the sight before them. He was amazed by the size of the creatures and the amount that was ravaging the land around it all.
Koryn thought a moment before perking up a bit though made sure to keep his voice quiet "Ah I have some pheromones' of different creatures. Maybe if I use a predator one they will smell it and it will startle them from the area for a while at least" he offered as he dug through his bag soon pulling out a vial showing it to the other "Owl bear. do you think this would work?" he asked looking to the other

"That could work, Fish will also work on something that can be utilized to scare them off." Fish puts the chalk and slate away, quite unceremoniously plopping down to take a seat.
While Koryn focuses on the pheromones he has, Fish will start building something else. They take out several pouches, some twine, their crossbow, and a bolt. It is hard to tell what the kenku is grabbing at a quick glance, but it's clear they are making some sort of powder.
Fish grabs a few bright red bulbs and tosses them into a mortar and pestle. Tiny little arms work the pestle, but it is slow going at first given the strength that Fish lacks. What they lack in biceps they make up for in persistence and conviction and eventually these bulbs and their seeds are mashed up into a fine paste that is added into the powder. Fish cinches off the satchel and ties it shut, attaching it to a bolt.
A firm nod is given once the contraption is made. Fish stands and waits for Koryn to finish before they settle in for their shot. "Fish is ready, but recommends standing clear so that Koryn is not caught in the ensuing attack."

Koryn nodded and smiled some as he fixed things up a bit to make a reaction so that it would be more of a fog when loosened. He then soon rolled it towards the creatures, watching it open creating a horrid smelling fog before taking some steps back in order for fish to do what he planned to do. He was honestly quite curious as he had never seen another at work and he was curious as to what the others creation would do.
His tail swept behind him a bit as his ears perked up with curious excitement waiting for a result. Koryn was always easily excitable but it only grew when it came to alchemy and inventions, it was the most fascinating thing and he loved to learn new skills from others as he traveled and worked alongside others. After all books could only get a person so far. Experience, and sharing knowledge with others brought on new ideas that one could never come up with alone.
He thought back to a few of his past colleagues and things he had learned smiling more as he hoped they would be proud of how far he had come by now

The grubs all seem to chitter and screech very unhappily. The gelatinous bodies wriggle, perhaps in fear or anger it is hard to tell. Even Fish seems a little on edge when the pheromones hit them, being pretty close to a prey creature. As they writhe, Fish fires off their contraption. A bolt fires towards a spot in a tree just above where most of the grubs are.
Upon impact, the bag loosens and a fine powder explodes out starting to rain down over the bugs. If they weren't upset before, they are now. The insects start to slowly retreat and get out of this area of foul smells and uncomfortable feelings.
They look to Koryn with a nod, "That should scare them off long enough to create a more permanent deterrent. We should sell some of our work to the village. They can use this themselves in the mean time."
Fish watches the bugs leaving a moment, wanting to make sure that this solution was actually working. The bugs seem wholly uninterested in sticking around. There is a moment of relief, but Fish suddenly has another realization, head snapping back to look at Koryn.
"We should leave before the pheromones attract an actual owl bear."

Koryn watched the creatures hoping they would flee swiftly surprised by the fire contraption that was flung at them next. He felt a little twinge of sadness for the creatures but knew this was necessary for the landscape to continue on.
He then read the board the other held before nodding some "Alright then that sounds good for now" he agreed and turned to leave as he saw the bugs beginning to scatter pausing as he saw the next note "Ah true. Let's get back to the town then" he remarked with a small smile beginning to walk making sure the other was with him as he surely did not want to leave his new friend behind.
He kept a watchful eye for trouble as they went back the way they had come for now wanting to make sure they would be safe as he hummed a quiet little tune under his breath having a hard time just staying in pure and complete silence as he went, his tail swinging to the tune some as he pondered on a permanent solution to the peoples problem hoping they would have one soon before the forest and its life were destroyed by the invaders

Fish's feathers are puffed up proudly as they follow behind Koryn. This was a relatively easy job all things considered and they had something new to try for the future. Fish had not thought about using pheromones before, but that could be very useful when trying to do similar work in the future. It's certainly a lot easier to gather plants with no beasties following after you.
They would have to follow up with Koryn when they got further to safety about where to procure such things. Of course, to be fair Fish was willing to trade the secrets of the special itching powder they had made to help irritate the grubs. Which is a good reminder, Fish will have to wait for a good rain to return and collect samples from this place if they can.
Their little head bobs back and forth to the tune Koryn hums as they going, softly mimicking it back. This was also a good benefit, Fish always enjoyed getting little sounds to try and mimic or reproduce. It certainly wasn't as smooth or as toneful as their partner's, but the bird was getting the hang of it. Just one more thing to their repertoire.

Koryn walked happily glad the first part of their mission went so well and was so easy. He wondered about what the other had thrown as he went but figured they could talk about it later once they were back in town as he knew better than to start asking a hundred questions while they walked through the forest.
Koryn was surprised to hear the other repeating his humming but smiled brightly as he continued glad the other seemed to enjoy it at least. He swayed his tail to the rhythm as he went and paused once they reached the edge of town "Well here we are! Should we go back and find the person who hired us and update him or start on the cure for the forest?" he asked turning to the other to hear his thoughts and opinions on it. He didn't seem at all tired and always seemed as energetic as a child as he went along through his days. He was being as patient as possible though and as calm as possible to avoid overwhelming the other with excitement and questions about themselves and their life as well as what they had learned over time.
