" Oh, hello again. We were just…doing research in the area and got curious about the noise" replied one of the researchers. His partner snorted " You aren't fooling anyone like that, Krys, but sorry, this is confidential stuff. Just do what we hired you to, and nothing gets messy." It was a little weird. Both the situation and the machine that the more blunt of the pair now stood in front of in a defensive stance. It'd stopped making that weird noise, but just a few moments ago, the noise had been giving me a killer headache. " Fine if that's how you want to play it" I grinned maniacally and cracked my knuckles, thinking of everything that I could think of that made me angry, annoyed, and vengeful, channeling it as demonic energy into my form and my surroundings. This time though, instead of just transforming my hands and forearms, my horns grew and the redness creeped all the way to my shoulders. When I spread my wings to intimidate them, I was surprised to see that they were now black with vibrant red barring on the back. I didn't let anyone in on my surprise though, fully committed to playing the part of the terrifying interrogator. I dropped my voice to a whisper only Shaa could hear, telling him, "You be good cop, I be bad cop," before turning to the opposition. "At least tell us what Roger was doing here."
This will be a little embarrassing if Roger wasn't here in the first place. Fingers crossed. Fiend LV.2 Invoke Fear, Abyssal Infusion

Shaa never got to be the good cop, this was awesome. Shaa gave him a knowing wink. Ohhh my friend here is getting pretty angry. I would start answering his questions before something bad happens…
The researchers started to look very concerned. One of them, a tall man named Krys, looked especially concerned. Shaa walked up to him and put his hand on his shoulder. Look man, I am just trying to help you out here. We were hired to find your buddy Roger. Since that time, a lot of really weird crap has started going down around here. Like, everyone and their mother lying to our faces. Just tell us the truth and we can all get out of here. What do you say?
Krys looked at his companions who were not so subtly shaking their hands trying to get him to be quiet. The problem was that Krys was at his limit. Look. Roger really is missing ok? The commission is absolutely legitimate. It’s just…. Shaa looked at the hesitation on Krys's face. It’s just what? He pressed. It’s just that Roger may have taken something with him when he disappeared. And what did he take?
Krys opened up a pouch and produced a parchment with some symbols drawn on it. They looked very similar to the symbols etched near the device. It’s a stone. A very special stone that’s used to translate runes like these. Without it, we may never figure out the device. And what exactly is this device supposed to be doing. As Krys was about to explain, a dart suddenly appeared in his neck and he collapsed. One of the hikers could be seen in the distance

Damn it. I thought unironically, considering that some people thought of the Ash Lands as hell on earth. I whipped around and saw one of the hikers standing on a rock spire holding a longbow a ways away. Where was his buddy? I scanned the area and spotted him creeping along the base of the mountain along the path Shaa and I had just been climbing. He was doing a decent enough job of being hidden, but not good enough to hide from me. So there were two groups of suspicious people- the researchers, and these hitmen. It would be so much easier to pick a side if I actually knew what was going on one of them ceased to exist. The growl I let out was very in character for a bad-cop, and also very genuine. "Okay, okay, I'll tell you but you'll have to help me" the halfling hastily said. "We'll be the judges of that" I said, stepping aside, giving the 'friend' with a bow a clear shot of our employer. I heard the whizz of another arrow and strained my connection to my demonic ancestry to swipe it as it passed in front of me. The splintered arrow fell harmlessly to the ground. He skittered further the cave entrance. "Fine! But let's take cover or beat them up or whatever first." Abyssal Infusion

Shaa had been skulking around since this adventure had started. He needed to DO something or he was going to lose it. Jerks with weapons, he could handle that. Shaa ran back down the path to hunt down the hiker who was trying his best to ambush them. While he ran around, he kept an eye out for any arrows coming his way. The second assailant seemed intent on trying to take out more researchers so Shaa felt pretty much in the clear.
Rounding the bend, Shaa found hiker number 2 hiding behind a large rock. You have to be kidding me man. You can’t honestly think that would actually work? The hiker pulled out a sword. It seems you are unarmed my friend. Give up the researchers and you and your bird friend can go. Shaa looked at the hiker incredulously. Ummm no, I don’t think I will. But my counter offer is you and your friend can leave, and I won’t turn you two into paste on the ground.
The hiker looked at the sword in his hand and back at Shaa. You have to be joking. Shaa folded his arms and stared at the man blankly. If you think you are just going to come up here and stab me with a sword, you obviously have never fought a Minotaur before. Seriously, just turn around and go. I’m hot and really annoyed. This will not go well for you. The hiker considered for a moment. I think your bluffing. I think you got lazy and didn’t bring a battle axe or club or something and you are just bluffing your way out of a fight. Shaa starts to yawn. Deal with this! The hiker slashes his blade at Shaa’s shoulder.
Shaa snatches the sword by the blade and yanks it out of the man’s hand. He walks over and bends the sword over his knee until it’s an awkward U shape, tossing it to the side. He then grabs the hiker by his jacket and hauls him over to the cliff. Ok let’s see what your friend has to say.

I don’t know if I’ve just been meeting more blood thirsty people lately, but first it was Blank with the pirates, and now it’s this guy and the would-be assailant coming up the hill. He goes with an enthusiasm for fighting that I wondered if I would ever acquire. Or that I've already acquired. I poked my head out of the cave “ BRING HIM BACK FOR INTERROGATION PLEASE,” I called before narrowly dodging an arrow and then scurrying back inside. Man, that archer’s annoying. I gave our remaining researcher a sharp side eye. “ Stay here” I said before darting out of the cave and giving out a shrill battle cry. The assassin was quite good- he got a glancing shot at my head and forced me to snap my wings closed and free fall for a split second to dodge a hit to my wing- in the 2 seconds it took for me to come into his hearing range. He startled and covered his ears, and in that moment, I swooped in and snagged his bow, sharp claws drawing blood and almost taking his hand with it. I wrapped a hand around his throat and threw his bow off the spire, about to have this guy follow. Should I? Just in case Shaa didn't hear me earlier, or kills him by accident. But either way, I'd be really hard to get him down from here. I looked at his mangled hand. Especially with that, considering he climbed up here, which I assume he did, since he was shooting me with a bow, and not magic. He swung a knife from his belt as he turned around, and I punted him away from me in surprise. Whalp, that solved that. May your flesh nourish the Earth and bring forth life. My wings now back to their normal appearance, and nursing minor injuries, I head back to the cave. Abyssal Infusion (end) Howls of the Damned (range ~25m)

Shaa dragged the now disarmed hiker down the hill and dumped him unceremoniously next to the researchers. Cracking his knuckles, Shaa stared at the entire group. Ok kids, it’s story time. There are a lot of questions and not a lot of answers and you ding dongs are going to provide those answers. I want to know what that thing is (pointing to the device), I want to know who you are (pointing to the hiker) and finally, WHERE THE @#$& IS ROGER? Shaa took some deep breaths and tried to calm himself down. The group was dead silent. Ok then….fine. If you guys don’t want to talk, maybe I can incentivize you.
Shaa walked over to the device. Last chance. Still no reaction from the group. Fine. Rearing up, Shaa starts kicking the device as hard as he can. Dents begin to form on the surface. Everyone starts in at once. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? ARE YOU CRAZY? Shaa continues kicking as larger and larger dents form. The device is now starting to vibrate and sound strange. Hmmmm that doesn’t sound good. He continues to kick it repeatedly. You have to stop that. You don’t know what your doing! He continues the assault. You’re right. How about one of you educate me before something unfortunate happens. The device starts shaking violently.
We can’t stay here! We just can’t! NOT GOOD ENOUGH! With a final kick, the device goes flying with a clang. Purple smoke starts pouring out of a hole where the device used to lay. It’s too late!

I landed at the mouth of the cave, just as Shaa dropped the hiker he’d gone to pursue. I let him play the bad guy- that scary form is hard to keep up, especially in a fight- and sat back to tend to the cut on my leg and the broken blood feathers on my head. I’d just finished binding my leg, and almost dropped the little jar of ointment when he started to KICK THE MACHINE. I slap a glob of it on to a towel and press it to my head as I yell and speed walk my way over to the IDIOT. It starts making the weird humm again, except this time, I was right next to it- what had been a building headache was now a full blown migraine, the noise hitting me like a sledgehammer. Smoke spewed from the machine and carpeted the floor, before it gathered again forming a shadowy figure. And then the noise stopped, I looked up and saw that there stood a figure. Dark red, scales, leathery wings, proud horns that shot up from it’s temples. It was a demon.
“Okay, so which idiot decided that breaking the contraption that harnesses a demon is a good idea” then it looked around. At the researcher’s corpse, at the minotaur with it’s foot to the machine, and our two captees. “That’s Roger” said the remaining researcher. Roger sighed “Gosh darn it. This is why I was against outsourcing the retrieval team”

Shaa watches as the demon emerges from the cloud of smoke. Ok , so Roger is a demon. On the bright side, this saves me a hike. Shaa licks his index finger, making a down and up motion in the air. Find Roger the researcher, check.
Well now that it seems this commission is officially complete, let’s get some things straight. Roger is a demon. The researchers are actually cultists trying to summon the demon by having it posses poor Roger. The hikers are trying to stop the demon from being released by killing the cultists. I pissed everyone off by releasing the demon, but only half baked so, not a full demon. Which basically means neither myself nor bird guy are getting paid for this little adventure. Did I miss anything? No? Fantastic.
Well ,now we are all playing guess who, let me be clear. My name is Shaa Rhunn. I am hot, sweaty and itchy from the dry climate. The fact that everyone has lied to me and I am not even GETTING PAID FIR THIS. It really….it really just kind of pisses me off.
Your irritation has no bearing on events Minotaur. For disturbing my awakening, you will suffer the pain of a thousand deaths.
Seriously, why are all you demons like that. It’s never like “ I will defeat you” it’s always, YOU WILL SUFFER ENDLESS AGONY BLAH BLAH. I mean seriously man, dial it down a notch, no one is impressed….well maybe those guys but their cultists, pretty low hanging fruit if you know what I mean.
SILENCE. I will finish the ritual and it will spell your doom.
Let me get this straight. IF you finish the ritual, then doom. So no doom now. It seems like a pretty large incentive to not let you finish if you ask me.
What?
Yeah, I’m not just going to just sit here and let you do the ritual. That would be pretty dumb on my part. What I am going to do instead, is pull off your head and shove it brusquely up your behind.
You dare!
Buddy, you have no idea.

If it were just me, I would have picked the pay out of the employer's pocket and booked it, but unfortunately, it is not just me, and it wouldn't be fair if only one of us got paid for a good day's work. So I wrapped a bandage around the gauze on my head, and 'received payment' on behalf of both of us while everyone was distracted with Shaa and Roger's banter, before getting ready to potentially need to extract my excitable temporary teammate. Angering demons was generally not done lightly, but it was obvious that Shaa had much of the reckless, confident, used-to-the-weird characteristics that most adverturers I'd travelled with had. I, unfortunately, was normal, and as much as I would have liked to have studied their demon-harnessing techniques to help with my own problems, survival came first. I consentrated on the flow of demonic energy, and the fall of shadows, ready to screech and drag Shaa, or vanish into the shadows of the cave and fight alongside him at the drop of the hat depending on how this… somehow mildly amusing stalemate ended.

As Shaa examined the situation, everything looked grim. Oddly enough, the only one on this entire trip he had been cool with was Fractale the bird man. Who would have figured. It was time to put an end to this nonsense. Ok Fractale, get ready to fly. I’m ending this commission one way or another.
In Shaa’s training as a Terramancer, he had pushed himself to the very limits of his abilities. During the course of this training , he had invented a spell that, as far as he knew, he was the only person in Charon who could cast it. He hadn’t tried it out in the open like this before, but now was as good of time as ever to give it a whirl.
Shaa smashed his hands together and began to chant. As he did so, the ground around him started to shake and then started to break down until it was only sand. Faster and faster, the sand swirled around Shaa’s feet and spread out across the ground. As it did so, the sand started pulling everything in towards the center. Anything with in a 20 foot radius was caught, trees, cultists p, hikers, demons, everything. The sand started to pull them down further and further while Shaa walked casually out past the event horizon, making sure Fractale was clear as well.
What in the world is this devilry? The demon cried as it was being pulled under. It is your punishment for pissing me off. And it’s only the beginning. Shaa started picking up large rocks and hurling them at the demon to keep him off balance. I have someone I want you to meet. And he is coming for you…
Shaa’s Sand Lion ( round 1) The caster stomps or slams the ground, summoning a medium sized sand worm to take position under the ground at the location of the slam. The sand worm will then begin to churn the earth, turning it into sand and slowly pulling anything in its range downwards towards its mouth. For three post, a 20 foot diameter sand pit will begin to form, the ground loose and hard to navigate, reducing the speed of anyone caught inside by half. Each post someone remains inside the pit, they will be pulled closer to its center, being dragged down into the sand. If any enemies are inside the pit at the end of its duration, they will be stuck for one post, unable to move their bodies as the ground hardens again, and will be bitten by the sand worm before it leaves the area. Can only have one pit out at a time and this spell can only be used on the ground.

Hahaha… no kidding. I thought as he told me to be ready to fly. I was expecting a fight, but seriously, he could have given me some warning before turning the ground to mush I jumped up as the sandy whirlpool opened under our feet. The demons cursed at us and I appreciate his sense of humor. “Devilry” huh? I see what you did there, cuz you’re like, a devil? Jokes aside, we needed to get out of there. I hopped onto the wall to avoid the treacherous ground before grabbing Shaa by the arm. I lunged, straining all my muscles to throw us out of the cave, and away from the swirling pit of death with a push of my legs and a flap of my blackened wings. Unfortunately, I underestimated this new form, and over estimated my grip strength. I went flying out of the cave, without Shaa, as my hand slipped from his arm, slick with blood- probably from scratches by virtue of my claws. I barely managed to prevent myself from tumbling to my doom, righting myself so that I just avoided falling head first off the narrow path that lead to the cave. I felt a scorching heat as I took a fireball to the butt. I sucked in a breath and panickedly smothered the flames. That hurt a lot. I scadoodled away a little, before peeking back in to see what was happening. In the cave, the demon was back pedaling as he aimed fire ball after fire ball at Shaa, slowly getting closer and closer to the eye of the vortex despite his best efforts.

Shaa laughed a bit as the bird man tries to pull him out of his own spell. As Shaa was the only person in Charon able to cast it, he’s not surprised at his confusion. Haha don’t worry about me. That would be pretty embarrassing to be taken out by a spell I invented. After the flyer was clear, the roaring demon started casting fire ball after fireball, the first catching the bird man himself. As Shaa sees the assault, he summons a wall to block the barrage. Gonna have to do better than that Sparky hahaha.
The vortex grew larger and stronger pulling the researchers, the hikers and the demon ever closer to the center. Shaa, uneffected by the torrent of sand, started lobbing stones over the wall to batter the enemies deeper into the ever growing pit. Rock after rock lands on the villainous crew as they sink ever deeper. You cannot stop me! Cried the Roger demon. My might and mind are too great for the likes of you. Release me and I promise you that your suffering will be quick. Shaa rolls his eyes. You sure threaten a lot for a guy being buried in the dirt. My spell is almost up and so are you. Can’t say it’s been fun. My only regret is not being able to save Roger. Have fun back in the pit.
The demon continues to growl and curse as Shaa prepares for the final stage. From the center of the pit, the sand starts bubbling up as something massive prepares to emerge.

Well, Shaa seems to be having fun. I thought as I watched him block the incoming fireballs and launch a volley of rocks in return. I think I'll leave him to it. The cave was too small for me to be of any use anyways- the vortex covered the floor and even peeked out of the cave, and the roof was too low for me to fly. I could climb the wall, but then I'd have no hands to fight with. But still, my hands itched for a fight. Why? Sure I could be annoying when I wanted to be, but I could typically take double what I fished out. Hell, most of the time I have to method act in order to dissociate myself when going into a fight with the intention of doing anything more than knocking my opponent out. Well, these guys cheated me, it's really hot and polluted, I'm a sitting duck in this situation, I guess I have the right to feel a little antsy. Yeah that's probably it. Remember the giddy feeling of ripping out that pirates's lungs? No, and I don't want to. And yet I didn't go in to save the rivaling researchers, or try to apprehend the demon to use what I knew of demonic conversions to turn him back. Not even when the earth bubbled and a creature- one that I knew could be a pain to fight from personal experience- emerged from the eye of the spell. Instead I watched and wrote. Wrote and doodled what I saw. It would make for good reference material.

As the spell wound down into its final phase, a giant sand-worm emerged from the center of the pit. Go DUSTY! Shaa yelled as the pit suddenly solidified, trapping all of the people caught in it partially underground. Unable to move or dodge, Dusty the sand worm be began his gruesome assault. Researchers and hiker alike flailed about helplessly as the worm systematically took out chunks of flesh and bone. Arrgghh save us!
This cannot be! Yelled the crazed Roger Demon. Curse you Minotaur! Curse you bird man! I will have my revenge on you both! I will make you suffer! I… Before the demon can finish the last of his curses, Dusty reared back around and bites his head clean off. With that, Dusty disappears back under the ground. Shaa had not seen him do that before and made a mental note to check the hand signs for the spell later. Whistling non chalontly, Shaa walks out of the cave and over to Fractale who is making some notes.
Well man, it looks like this mission was a total bust. Got into a fight. Got no money out of it. Basically a giant waste of time. Shaa looks back at the cave. I suppose that’s the last we will see of Roger either. Man I do not want to write this report. Shaa takes a moment to look at the notepad. Nice doodles man. Sorry this is a bummer. Maybe we will run into each other again sometime. With that, Shaa kicked a rock towards the cave and started his long trek back to the guild.
