The brothers follow Shaa around. Zarius was content letting the minotaur lead the way since his brother was so enamored by the bovid man. Shaa seemed trustworthy enough from what he could glean. The minotaur didn't appear to have any ulterior motives.
It was good for Karize to get out and interact with others besides his own family. He didn't get the opportunity to do so often, especially in Darkveil where they hailed from. There were too many enemies there just waiting for an opportunity to strike. Unfortunately for Karize, he was not blessed with natural athleticism like Zarius or magical talent like their sister. He was much better suited to indoor paperwork than fighting. He was smart and clever in a bookish sense, but he lacked street smarts.
Here though for this moment, so as long as he was enjoying himself and staying safe, Zarius didn't mind taking a step back.
As they leave back out the tent though, his gaze follows Shaa's and he spots those bandits again. So, they were being followed then. Now the question is if they're following the minotaur, or the brothers. It was too hard to tell yet, he would just have to keep Karize close and watch them out of his periphery.
He turns to Shaa and says loud enough for the bandits to overhear. "It is quite crowded here. Why do we not take our practice throwing into a clear alley?"
Karize startles as another goblin gets shot out of the cannon and the gnolls erupt into a cacophony of excited yips and hollers over a freshly created meal.
"Yes, maybe somewhere quieter." Karize agrees while rubbing his hear.

The group left the tent and headed back to the streets. After a couple turns, they found themselves in a quiet alley with a pile of garbage at the end. Shaa kicks the garbage to check for anything sharp or hard but finds it full of rotten food and rags. Awesome, this should work just fine.
Shaa pulled the two goblins out of the barrel. They looked a little scrunched so he shook them out a bit.
Agghh that’s much better. Said Cras. Ready to fly, fly!
Shaa marks out a line and shakes out his arms. Ok so the trick to this is to keep loose and focus on your target. You know if you have a good goblin if they can stay balled up, reduces drag.
Fly now?
Test fly. You just stay clenched up real good ok?
We go fly!
Shaa was mentally locking in his garbage target when he hears a voice from behind them.
And what do we have here?

Ah. There it is.
Zarius hands the goblin he had picked up out of the barrel to Karize. "Hold this."
Karize takes the goblin with an oof. "C-can I not just let it down?" He asks nervously glancing that the group of bandits that have interrupted their practice throws.
Zarius doesn't answer him and just stands between his brother and the bandits.
"Uh, hello, nice to meet you, sorry." Karize whispers to the goblin, awkwardly holding it like a child would hold a cat from its armpits.
"My apologies gentlemen, we do not have any extra goblins to share. You will have to look elsewhere if you wish to compete in the event." Zarius says with a friendly smile, but there's a slightly threatening tone in his voice.
"Yeah, no. Ain't here to toss any goblins." The pipe-chomping bandit leads the group of six additional goons all wearing worn patchwork armor and armed with daggers and scimitars.
The click of a crossbow's latch from above them in the alley catches his attention. Two more on the roof. These odds wouldn't normally be concerning, Shaa seemed strong enough to handle a fight. The problem was Karize. He couldn't fight at all and Zarius couldn't risk his safety. There wasn't much cover in the alley either other than the barrel the goblins had been stuffed in.
"What do you want then?" Zarius asks.
"You demon spawn aren't from around here. In fact, I think I know exactly where you're from."
"Your point?"
"Past client of ours had some problems with a dark skinned tiefling few months back. Broke into his own house and robbed him blind. Made him pretty mad. Put out a bounty and everything. Just our luck that we found two fitting the description out here in this little hovel town."
Damn Lunala, these bandits had connections to one of the rival crime families in the Ash Lands then. Zarius slowly reaches for his pockets for his weapons.
"Hey! Don't you try nothing now." The bandit leader waggles his finger as the two bandits on the roofs point their crossbows down on the group.
Karize shrinks back against the wall. "Brother..." He whispers urgently.
Zarius hisses a swear in Infernal under his breath. "My apologies, we seem to have brought this trouble upon you as well, Shaa."
"Hey, minotaur! Step aside and we can forget any of this happened. Unless you want to help us out, we'll cut you in."
Zarius glares at the bandit and glances at the minotaur out of the corner of his eye. He didn't like the look of the odds should the minotaur be swayed over to the bandits' side. The brothers would have no choice but to surrender if that was the case. This was bad. This was very bad.

Shaa always considered himself a “ more enlightened” kind of Minotaur. He had friends. He liked to read. Prayed to Ginma on the regular. He had been all over Charon and seen and experienced so much that it had broadened his mind and opened his heart to all sorts of unexpected things. But there was no denying that, deep down , way deep down in his hooves, he was a Minotaur. He liked eating. He liked punching things, probably a little too much and too often. And he liked having fun. As a result, he really really did not like party poopers. So there they were. Party poopers who wanted to hurt his little new found fan. Shaa didn’t get a lot of fans, mostly due to all of the punching and Minotaurness, so he wasn’t about to lose one, especially to these guys. It was the easiest decision he had made all day.
Well, thank you for the invitation to abandon my friends and not beat the snot out of….well all of you. My counter offer is that you all turn around now and you can keep your limbs attached to your bodies.
Shaa took a quick inventory of all his opponents down the alley and up on the walls. They weren’t moving. The goblins had crawled back into the barrel to hide.
Well, I did warn you. And as a fun side note for you all, I happen to be the Captain of the Fighters Guild. Shaa flexed his hands open and shut. Here’s why.
With a shocking burst of speed , Shaa was covering Karize. As the crossbows fired, Shaa snatched both the bolts out of midair and, with a twist, threw the bolts like darts back into the faces of the bandits who fired them. One falls down screaming and other wasn’t moving at all, hanging limply over the side.
Blood racing through his veins, Shaa ducked his head and burst through several bandits getting behind them and goring one with his horns in the process. As he turns, he grabs another one roughly by the face and smashes his head into the wall with a dull thud. His companion hilariously tries to punch Shaa. Shaa grabs his fist mid punch and uses it to, in turn, punch the bandit in the face with his own fist, breaking his nose. The bandit falls down, going into a fetal position on the ground.
Everything was happening so fast. The bandits, seeing their companions being mowed down by the now angry monster, are sent into a panic. Two men with scimitars start towards Zarius. The remaining bandits flee down the alley in an attempt to escape the onslaught.
Come back here you cowards! Shouted the pipe bandit. It was the last thing he said before his pipe was shoved up his nose.

Zarius had been gearing himself up to fight the bandits and possibly Shaa himself. Completely unnecessary as Shaa springs into action without hesitation and sends the bandits scattering. He just stands there watching with this perplexed expression for a moment before movement in his periphery catches his attention.
Two bandits rush at him with their scimitars drawn. The first one closes the gap between them and goes for a swipe across his chest. Zarius steps into the bandit's swing and redirects his strike to miss.[1] A look of shock washes over his face before it is crumpled in by Zarius' bare fist, knocking him clean off his feet and down onto the ground.[2] Whipping around he manages to catch the second bandit as it circles around behind him with a roundhouse kick to the jaw.[3]
He huffs and looks at the two KOed bandits then around at the scene of the rest fleeing thanks to Shaa's quick reactions.
Karize is crouched up against the wall with his tail curled around his feet and clinging to the goblin like it's a security blanket. He stares at Shaa in admiration.
Zarius looks at his brother then Shaa. The minotaur was not senseless. There was clearly intelligence behind his eyes. Still, he had assessed the situation and chose them, strangers he barely knew and had only met a few hours prior, over what was likely a decent amount of Solars. His shoulders relax when he sees Karize's expression and he walks over to Shaa and the bandit leader.
The leader is howling in pain with the pipe jutting out of his face. Zarius looks at Shaa briefly before grabbing the bandit and throwing him to the ground.
Stepping on the bandit's back, he proceeds to search his pockets. Seems like he's looking for something specific as he ignores the few coins that spill out of the bandit's pockets. He removes a piece of ratty parchment from one of the bandit's belt pouches and quickly glances over its contents before folding it and tucking it into his own bag. He gets off the bandit and gives him a good kick to the ribs.
"Get out of here. Tell your client he should have cut his losses."
The bandit staggers to his feet and stumbles out of the alley.
Zarius waits until he is out of sight then looks back at Karize. "You can stop cowering now." He says with a very unimpressed tone.
Karize slowly stands up and walks over to Shaa. "That was amazing, Mister Shaa! Thank you."
"It was an impressive display, you have our gratitude." Zarius nods.
Pah, the goblin, squirms in Karize's sloppy grip. "We fly now! Fly, fly!"

Shaa looks down at the little Tiefling and musses his hair for the second time Anytime Little K. They will think twice about wrecking anymore of our parties. I didn’t even get to use any “magic” Shaa wiggles his fingers in front of Karize in a magical way. Shaa turns to Zarius.
Well it looks like you can handle yourself ok. I was a little worried about the scimitar guys but it’s good to know you can take care of yourself. Shaa looked around at the semi conscious ( or slightly unalived) bandits and thought it best to change locals. Ehhh, we had better move along before the gaurds start asking questions that I’m likely to answer poorly.
Shaa jammed the goblins back in the barrel. He kicked some of the bodies under the garbage and started to head out of the alley with the barrel under his arm. As he passed Karize, he scooped him up with his free hand and set him on his shoulders to give him a ride. Bet you never got a ride from a Minotaur Little K. Shaa chuckled. If you ever tried this with another of my kind, you would likely not find them as accommodating.
Shaa looked up at the sun. Well looks like we are going to have to wing it. The competition should be starting soon and we still have to get these two registered.
We fly now? Cups is mine? Said Crass in a muffled voice from inside the barrel.
Yeah yeah soon. Said Shaa. Assuming nothing else happens…
It doesn’t take long and the group finds themselves in an open field just outside the town. There are even more stalls here and the people are gathering on some make shift stands that line the field. There is a desk with some tattered banners off to one side. Several people with their goblins are lined up there so Shaa assumes that is the registration. He motions for Zarius to follow him to the desk.

"I have some experience with fighting." Zarius admits, though it was an understatement.
He had been training in martial arts since he could walk, it was important to be able to defend himself while traveling across the realm on his own. What's more is that his father expected him to take over after he retired. Zarius' training was all to ensure he could be both the spear and the shield of the whole family's operation. Karize didn't have such responsibilities.
Zarius also looks around and nods. "Wise words. We will follow your lead." He says only to see Shaa scoop up Karize and put him on his shoulder. He couldn't help but laugh.
Karize's charcoal skin blushes a darker shade on his face as he's hoisted up. He clings to Shaa's horn to keep from tumbling off and laughs nervously. "I am not sure about this!"
"You look great!" Zarius calls up to him mockingly.
"Sh-shut up."
Zarius follows Shaa to the field and then to the registration desk. Looking around, there were a good number of burly individuals all flexing on one another and showing off to spectators. He probably stood out like a sore thumb amongst this crowd in comparison. He started questioning how this day came to this, but that train of thought is interrupted by the staff at the registration desk asking for their names.
"Zarius. No last name."
A lie, but they don't question it and scribble down his name and hand over two matching colored sashes, one for the toss-er, and another for the toss-ee.
Once registration is complete, they head off to wait their turn. Zarius spots the Ogre across the way glowering at them. Or more likely glowering at Shaa since it was the minotaur who had mainly been a part of that altercation. Still, if the ogre got any ideas to mess with Karize just to annoy Shaa, he would be guaranteeing himself a visit to the local healer.
Zarius looks at Shaa. "Any tips on goblin throwing technique? Do you prefer overhand or underhand?"

Shaa finished registering. In the end, they decided Shaa would throw Cras and Zarius would throw Pah. Shaa tied the sash on his horn and the corresponding sash on Cras’s foot.
As they walked, Shaa thought about Zarius’s question. Well, as we didn’t really get to practice, I suppose it’s only fair to throw a bit of wisdom you way. We already covered a couple rules of goblin tossing already, so here are the last two
Rule #3. Always disarm your goblin. Crass stuck his tongue out at Shaa. Disarming drops weight and makes sure they don’t try and stab you out of principal as you toss them. Shaa rubbed an old scar on his arm that helped remind him of that rule.
Rule #4 aka the rule of 45. Under or over hand doesn’t matter. The key is to throw them as close to a 45 degree angle as possible. Under and they go skidding across the dirt. Over and they go up and not out. Shaa hands Zarius a small pack.
This is the only legal piece of equipment you can use, a goblin glider. Once you toss them, they need to decide when to open the glider for max distance. Too soon causes drag, splat. Too late, headwind, straight down, splat. This contest has been lost by mere inches, so every bit matters.
Me fly far, bestest flyer. Shouted Crass who was strapping on his glider. Pah go big splat. Pah gave him a crusty look even for a goblin. It was hard to imagine someone getting so excited about being hurled into the air.
Shaa set Karize down on the ground and started his stretches. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed the ogre making his way over.

Zarius listens to Shaa's advice and nods. He takes the small pack and hands it over to Pah. "You do know how to use this, right?"
Pah scoffs. "Pah knows. Throw good. Pah fly far. Pah win."
He's a bit skeptical but he's hardly an expert in this sport so he has to take the goblin at its word.
"Any weapons on you?"
"Knives."
Zarius holds his hand out. "Rule number 3. Hand them over."
"Neh! Throw good. Pah no stab."
He isn't going to take the chance and he picks up Pah and shakes him until all his knives fall to the ground.
"AaaaaAAAaaaaah!" Pah shouts.
Karize is shocked at how many knives the small goblin was concealing.
Once his goblin is set up, Zarius also starts stretching. He notices Shaa look over in the ogre's direction and sighs. "Not this fool again." He mutters.
The ogre trudges over to them and right up to Shaa. It puffs out its chest and squares up again.
"Minotaur, the time has come to settle the score. I will defeat you here for all to see. You will return to your lands in shame." He spits on at Shaa's hooves.
"Do you really need to be over here making such proclamations? If you are so skilled, then simply win the event." Zarius critiques.
The ogre snorts and glowers down at the tiefling. "You are still here, fire spitter? I have not forgotten my warning as you have."
"Oh, please. Your threats are amateur at best."
The ogre takes a threatening stop towards Zarius.

The Minotaur took a hard snort towards the ogre to get his attention away from Zarius. Aren’t you forgetting something cabbage brain? You need a goblin to throw in the goblin toss. Where’s yours? Or did you have a lover’s quarrel? The ogre sneered at Shaa and turned towards a little shape that was plodding up to him. Behind him was the weirdest looking goblin Shaa had ever seen except when he had watched one get magically mutated. talesofcharon.proboards.com/post/3333/thread He only had one eye, was missing most of his teeth and fingers. His bones looked crooked as well as what appeared to be several permanent dents in his head. When Pah saw him, he gasped.Bone breaker….You know this guy? Shaa asked.Bone breaker famous flying goblin. Broke everything. Pah thought he very splatted by now. Cras nodded his head in agreement.Cras still better flyer…but bone breaker…pretty good.Shaa was shocked that Cras would actually complement…well anyone. This little smashed bag of bones might be a problem if he had managed to stay alive in a sport like this for this long.Shaa shook his head, he had to get his mind back in the game, goblin ringer or not.We will see what’s up wart face. You will need any advantage you can get. Shaa looked at Zarius and gave him a determined nod.

Zarius crosses his arms and returns Shaa's nod. This ogre was starting to push his luck. It would be entertaining to make him eat his words if only to spite him.
Pah gathers every ounce in his little goblin body and steps up to Bone Breaker. He stands on his tippy toes and folds his arms to try and mimic Zarius and look intimidating. "Pah no scared of Bone Breaker. Pah fly far. Pah win."
Bone Breaker takes a sudden step forward and Pah jumps back defensively.
"Heheheheh."
"Hmph, your gems may just be fragile glass after all. We will destroy you out on the field." The ogre snorts and stomps off.
"Heheheheh, break legses." Bone Breaker says to Cras and Pah as he cackles and hobbles after the ogre.
Trotting across the field is a heavy set centaur with a hollowed out horn in his hands. He holds it up and speaks through it like a megaphone.
"Welcome competitors! It is time for the Annual Goblin Toss! Prepare yourselves and a reminder to all our spectators that we are not liable for any injury you may sustain from falling goblins!"
With that, the competitors start making their way to the field with their goblins.
"Time to fly, fly! Throw good! Pah win!"
"Alright, alright." Zarius turns and looks at Karize. "Do not get kidnapped while we compete."
"I will try not to but if I do I will let you know." Karize shrugs, it's not like he can do much else other than scream if that happened. "Good luck, Mister Shaa!"

As competitors lined up on the field according to the order they were provided at registration, Shaa noted two particular looking pylons with large crystals on top that lined either side. The centaur approached everyone with some last minute instructions.
Hello everyone and thank you for coming. As most of you are aware, we have been doing this for several years now. As such, I would like to think that we have learned from some past mistakes. We want to keep things as fair as possible and reducing the number of….casualties . Several goblins cheered. We have also increased security to discourage cheating and fighting.
In line with that, you have undoubtedly noticed the pillars on either side. These are very powerful magic suppressors. They will prevent you from using magic to give yourself or your goblin an unfair advantage ie blink spells, spells that impact weight etc. It will also block spells directed at you or your goblins. Skills and abilities however should not be impacted. Remember, you only get one toss, no redos. Shaa wondered if this had anything to do with the year when he used earth magic to turn into a 30 foot Minotaur and launched his goblin across the entire field. Oddly enough, he had actually lost that year when someone else made their goblin weightless accidentally and it just floated away. It was probably for the best.
One by one, the competition stepped up to the line and gave a toss. Some slipped and just rolled. Others did not get high enough in the air for the glider to open and just came crashing down. By the time of the 10th tosser, the farthest throw had been from a barbarian from the Arid Mesa. Shaa thought he might have a little giant in him as he managed to get his goblin 35 ft, beating all the other competitors handily. Soon the ogre was up to throw. Shaa noted the evil eye he was casting in their direction.
The ogre walked right up to the line which was a weird move considering most tosses give it a running throw. After taking a wide legged stance, the ogre huffs and launches Bone Breaker straight up into the air. Shaa is about to laugh hard at the maneuver until he sees Bone Breaker twist and flatten himself out. Right at the apex, he releases his glider and points it at just the right angle. Out he soars way past the marks until he lands gently at 85 feet. Shaa’s jaw drops in disbelief.
Yeah, him good flyer….Cras said slowly

Zarius shakes his head after the ogre makes his throw. Bone Breaker pulled off that stunt flawlessly. He can't help but look down at Pah with doubt evident on his face.
Pah glances at him. "Pah can do that."
"Right. Of course you can. Problem is I am not going to throw you like that."
"Throw good. Pah fly far."
"Guess we will find out."
Zarius steps up for his turn which causes some heckling from the audience due to his size compared to the other tossers.
"Who let a dainty lady out on the field?"
"Lose a dare, demon spawn?"
He ignores them and shakes out his arms. He'd been called worse. He walks up to the line then paces backwards to measure the distance until he gets to a distance he is satisfied with.
"Throw already! We want to see the real competitors!"
"Pah not sure ant know what ant doing."
Ant? Zarius' eye twitches a bit. "Shut up and just make sure you get the timing right on that glider." He picks up Pah unceremoniously by one leg and one arm.
"Pah sorry! Pah fly, fly!"
Zarius holds Pah out from him and starts towards the line while spinning slowly then builds momentum as he gets closer. Like a hammer thrower, Zarius uses the increasing centrifugal force from the spinning then slings Pah into the air.
Pah goes flying at a 45 degree angle just as Shaa had recommended. The goblin screeches until it starts to lose momentum and crest to the max height of the throw.
"Pah feel sick!" Despite that, the goblin manages to deploy the glider and soars across the field.
Zarius holds a hand up over his eyes and squints. It was a solid throw and Pah's angle of descent was pretty decent too.
As the ground approaches, Pah picks up his feet and curls up. "No splat! No splat!" The goblin's butt contacts the ground and he tips forward into a sommersault across the ground. "Owowowowowowow!"
He eventually comes to a stop and there's a moment of silence as the centaur jogs up to announce the results of the throw. "Did...did Pah win?"
The final distance to where Pah first contacted the ground was shockingly 86 feet.
The crowd errupts in disbelief. Zarius snorts, not as far as he hoped. He looks at Shaa. "Well, let the best tosser win."

It was finally Shaa’s turn to throw. 86 feet was an impressive throw and he was a little proud inside. He always liked an under dog. But, he also liked to win.
He started about 15 feet behind the line, dug deep and for the second time that day, a burst of adrenaline rushed through his body. No magic here, just experience. In a blazing burst of speed, Shaa rushed forward and with enormous bull strength, heaved Cras with a tremendous throw. As Cras whipped through the air, the wind rushed against his face giving him a a strange windswept smile. Cras….muuusst….Winnn!
Cras felt that he was starting to slow. It was almost time. When he felt that he was floating, he popped his cord on his glider and the wings spread out in a clean swoop. Shaa felt elated. He was going to pull this thing off. It was at that point that a crossbow bolt tore through the wings of the glider.
Things we’re moving in slow motion as the adrenaline pumped through him. He watched as the wings of the glider exploded in a cloud of leather and wood. Cras started yelling Cras …gooo. Splaaa….
Shaa ran past the line towards the plummeting goblin. He could hear the whistle disqualifying him blasting from behind. A small tear formed in the corner of his eye but that didn’t matter now. He only had a few seconds. With a last minute jump, he grabbed the awkward mass before it slammed into the ground.
Cras is dead…splatted dead…ooohhh nooo. Cras oped his eyes and stared into Shaa’s face. Bull man go splat too? He said confused. No man, no splat today. The little goblin sniffled a bit and passed out.
There were several boos coming from the stands. Shaa scanned the crowd for the crossbow. It didn’t take long until he spotted a man who wasn’t even trying to hide. It was the bandit from earlier who had apparently removed the pipe from his nose. And the crossbow was still pointed at him.
Shaa rushed the stand. The bandit, his nose still bloody, started firing bolt after bolt right at him. At first it was easy to dodge and reflect. But as he drew closer, the shots got closer and closer until finally he was at almost point blank range. Before he can grab him, a bolt is fired into his shoulder.
Arggghhh Shaa cried as spectators pored out of the stand. Shaa grabs the bow with his uninjured arm and breaks it over his knee. The bandit jumps over the side and takes off down the street.

Zarius sees the crossbow bolt hit and Shaa take off running. He tracks the trajectory of the shot to the bandit from before. He's about to rush to Shaa's aid when he stops himself and looks around quickly. The crowd had erupted into chaos when the attack started and people were still running around trying to find cover. Karize, however, was no where to be seen.
He curses under his breath. He had JUST told the idiot not to get kidnapped. Fury boils up inside him and he sprints over to Shaa as fast as he can just as the bandit flees.
"They took Karize!" He shouts at Shaa as he runs past in hot pursuit of the bandit. No way is he letting this guy get away.
Zarius isn't usually the type to get mad, but messing with his family was a good way to get his blood boiling. Though mad is putting things lightly. This bandit was in for a very bad time when the tiefling catches up to him.
The bandit glances back over his shoulder and sees they're after him. He weaves through the panicked crowd and even shoves a few people off their feet to block their path. Zarius jumps over the civilians and swipes an empty glass bottle off the street. He whips the bottle at the bandit, but he dips behind a blind corner just before the bottle smashes against the wall of the next building.[1] Zarius suddenly pivots and runs down an earlier alley. If the bandit was trying to lure him into an ambush, he wouldn't play so nicely.
