A horrible commotion broke out as they ran through the forest, rushed by the chase after them. Cheche half-flew, paying no attention to the thorns and branches aiming to stop her.
Only by a miracle, she didn't crash into any of them, she was quickly getting out of breath. Her chubby face was flushed, the last sparks of fire still shining in her black beady eyes. Soon Cheche started lagging behind. Their escape was interrupted by a wide stream blocking their path. Zarius halted, and Cheche crashed into him from behind with a loud "Ouch!". She stepped aside and tried the water with one finger: Icy! Do they have to step into it? Distant barking of the dogs left them no time to ponder: the cultists were hot on their trail. Zarius picked her under his arm, leaving her hanging and dangling her feet in the air. Astonished and fuming as she was, she only puffed: they had to break away from the chase. To their luck, soon the voices and clamor faded away.
Zarius put her down, only smirking at the sight of her frowning face, all covered with mud and soot. First and foremost, they had to find a safe place to hide in case the cultists decided to look up the stream. The night had passed, and now they were washed by greyish morning light. The day promised to be neither bright nor warm though. They trotted through the grove some more. A massive rock, covered by moss, was cutting into it. It promised a decent shelter from the wind and offered dry branches and foliage in abundance. Cheche settled down in a dry cozy spot between the rock and an old bent tree, made herself a leafy nest, and started nodding off. "Whoah!" - she heard Zarius gasp, the pixie startled wide awake. Her heart was pounding like crazy: "what? Where? horsies?" To her greatest relief, the cultists were nowhere to be seen. Cheche approached him, the two rounded stones in his hands were dark, cold, and seemed ancient. The surface was covered by some strange glyphs. Zarius put the two together and it turned out they fit perfectly well.
"It is some sort of cipher wheel...we do not have whatever it is meant to decode though." - he added with a sigh.
Cheche rubbed her nose thoughtfully and stood still for a moment.
"I think... I've seen these somewhere not so long ago. Have you ever been to the Stargazer village? I've seen a sign like this" -she pointed hastily "and this...and this one... they were engraved at the wall of the old tavern there".
