Beist finished pouring the powder into the small cauldron and gave the contents a mix. The liquid bubbled from the heat of the flame beneath it, a bit of sour-smelling smoke rising from it. He grabbed the tiny vial of a red liquid from the counter and added a single drop as he continued to mix. The potion immediately changed color from a dark green to a bright blue.
"This should be it" he said under his breath. "Now just need to let it sit overnight, and tomorrow I'll have my old self back! Well, most of it... My beast form will likely remain as it is, but hopefully my human form hasn't changed since then."
He stepped out of the back of the wagon and around to the side where Dora lie waiting for him to make dinner.
The next morning, he awoke suddenly, full of excitement. Today was the day, the potion should be complete! He went over to the now cool cauldron and peaked inside. The potion had changed color yet again, becoming a deeper, darker blue. The sign that it had finished maturing overnight. He wanted to drink it then and there, but reminded himself he had other duties in the morning. He had already waited so long for this, he could wait just a little longer.
He gave Dora her breakfast of conjured fruits and vegetables, playfully throwing them for her to catch. He patted her head and stroked her back as he happily spoke to her.
"Soon Dora, I'll be a new man. Well, an old man. My old self! Oh dear, I'm so excited I can hardly speak. Wait here a moment, I'll be right back."
He want back into the wagon and reemerged with a chalice of the dark blue liquid. "Normally, I would put my potions in bottles, but this seemed appropriate for such a special occasion, right Dora?" he said as he gave the griffon a wink before draining the chalice in one gulp.
He stood there for a moment, letting the potion take effect. He wondered briefly if it hadn't worked after a short time passed with no reaction, but he suddenly felt a tingling sensation throughout his whole body. He looked down to see his fur was all shrinking away, leaving his blueish grey skin exposed, but the skin was quickly changing color to a warm, slightly pale skin tone. The claws on his hands and feet were shrinking into normal nails. His horns were retreating into his head, and his tail was shrinking back into his spine. The potion was working!
He stood in front of a shocked Dora, completely returned to his human form. His short hair and beard was the same dark grey his fur had been instead of the brown it used to be, but that was a negligible side effect. His clothing was now far too large for him and hung loosely. The potion had really worked!
"Look Dora! It's me!" he called to the griffon who stared at him with some suspicion and curiosity. If they had not just watched the man change right in front of them, they would think this was a total stranger.
"It worked! It-" he suddenly groaned as he felt a terrible pain in his stomach. He fell to the ground, holding his stomach and groaning. Dora came closer, concerned as the man in front of her grew back to his original beastly size and appearance. She soon started stepping back in fear as he continued growing and changing, his clothes shredding as he groaned out "No... It didn't work..."
