Helia and Luzien
Gender: Helia female, Luzien male Age: about 17 Race: half elf? Nationality: Frost Gale Appearance: They are conjoined twins that have been separated. As such they are both missing an arm where they used to be joined. They have pale skin and hazel eyes with slightly pointed ears.
Helia has straight, long, black hair with a white stripe in her straight fringe. Luzien has white, about chin length hair with a black stripe in it.
Under the light of a full moon, their skin shimmers faintly.
They both stand at about 5'5", but Luzien's straight back makes him seem slightly taller next to Helia's perpetual slouch. Personality: Helia is high spirited and energetic. Her emotions tend to come on strong and hot like a sudden burst of flame.
Luzien is more subdued and often keeps his spontaneous sister in check, but once he is angered his wrath is as unstoppable as the rising tide.
However their psychic connection means they are often influenced by the other's emotions. History: They grew up in a research facility, where they went through rigorous physical, mental and magical tests day in and day out. No one ever explained what those tests were for and since they didn't know any other life they rarely questioned it. Being conjoined twins, they always had an unbreakable bond that was only strengthened by their ability to communicate mentally with each other and feel each other's emotions at all times. When they were still conjoined, they often were so in sync that they thought, acted and spoke with a single mind. After they were forcefully separated this mental bond weakened and they rarely experience complete synchronicity anymore. However, they are still able to communicate psychically and feel each other's emotions.
When an unknown event destroyed the facility that housed them a few years ago, they managed to escape. Barely surviving the harsh no-man's land of the Frost Gales, they took on new names and set out to discover their place in the world.

A small window into their travels
somewhere in King's Valley, two years ago
“Wow, would you look at that view!” Helia exclaimed as she settled down next to Luzien, her shoulder touching his. Their lunch spot today was a fallen tree on the side of the path they’d been hiking. The rocky hill they were climbing was the tallest in the immediate vicinity and afforded them a breath-taking view over the windswept foothills all around them.
“It really is marvellous, isn’t it?”, he agreed. He held her bag open for her as she rummaged for their rations inside of it, her arm reaching far into the depths of the bag as she was trying to locate their lunch.
Oh great, we’re having mush again today. You really need to organise your stuff better, sis, he quipped, not bothering to speak the thought out loud.
If it’s such a problem for you maybe you should start carrying all the heavy foodstuff and I take the light blankets instead. She shot back as she finally located their lunch and pulled it out the bag.
Luzien just snorted. They both knew their shared camping supplies were a good bit heavier than the mere rations she was carrying and yet, this was still a constant topic of their bickering. Not that he minded, of course. This argument was familiar. Comforting and easy.
Their hands worked together with practised ease, unwrapping bread and cheese, opening jars and bottles and loading their plates with bite-sized chunks that were easy to grab.
For a time they ate in silence. Enjoying the food, the gentle breeze and each other’s company.
“Could you imagine what it would feel like to fly over these hills?” Helia sighed dreamily.
“Are we really starting this conversation again?” Luzien let her feel his annoyance. She had been bringing up this topic too often lately.
“No… I’m just thinking out loud. Forget it.” But even if he hadn’t been able to feel her emotions at any time, he would have been able to see the sorrow written plainly across her face.
“If I remember correctly, the last time they had allowed us to practise flight, it was more like we were falling slowly. You couldn’t have even called it gliding. You know as well as me that our body would have never really allowed for flight. And that was even before-” His voice hitched. He did not want to return to those memories. “You agreed when we did it, that getting rid of the wings was the right choice. I don’t understand why you keep bringing this up.”
“But that was before we knew what it really meant to be free! Before we could have ever guessed what we’d be missing out on. Could you even imagine how glorious it would be to feel the wind carrying us high up into the sky? Not to mention how convenient it would be to be able to fly now. It would certainly cut down on our travel time. Maybe the wings would have grown stronger over time. We kept growing after all... We should have waited until we had some idea on what we’d be losing!” she almost yelled that last part. Her anger flared. Hot and sudden as ever.
His anger was slower to build, but it came like the rising tide, unforgiving and threatening to drown them both.
“Waited for what?”, he shouted back. “Even if we would have been able to fly before, how would that have been possible now? What would you do, bind us together with a rope?”
They stared at each other in shock. Tears were spilling down Helia’s face and they were threatening to brim over Luzien’s eyes, too.
Of course they had discussed the topic before in the years since they had been ripped apart. But never like this… They had always danced around the topic. With mutual understanding that it was too painful to speak about it plainly. And what was the need for talking about it, when they knew each other’s every thought?
But yet here it was. Still a gaping wound after all this time. Their physical wounds might have healed, leaving ugly scars that now only occasionally ached. But their mental wounds were as raw and painful as on the first day.
Literally being ripped in half was likely something that could never be fully recovered from. Their emotions surged against each other. Pain and anger and desperation all trying to eclipse each other. They weren’t angry at each other, of course. Not really. This was just how their anger at the world as a whole happened to manifest. In the end, Helia faltered in the onslaught of rage and her emotions turned to a sadness so deep it swept them both up in an instant.
Grasping at the first thing that came to mind, she returned the conversation to their original topic instead of wallowing on their loss any further.
“Maybe our magic could have made it work….” her voice was barely more than a whisper as she turned her gaze away from him. He could hear the suppressed sob in her voice. Could feel it in his own chest.
“Hel…”, he began. The wave of anger ebbing away, leaving only sorrow behind. He leaned closer and rested his head against hers. “Maybe it would have, but-”
“I know.”, she interrupted. “We do already stand out enough as is. No need to have wings draw even more attention to the fact that we’re not… whatever. I just wish things were different…”
“Me too…” Luzien whispered. He didn’t say that their magic would never be powerful enough to work miracles like that. He didn’t need to. She knew.
They interlaced their fingers and sat there for a long while. Their emotions and thoughts mixing. Trying to draw comfort from each other’s closeness. But it wasn’t quite close enough. Would never again be close enough.
“Right!” Helia exclaimed after a while and rose to her feet, disentangling herself from their embrace. “Enough of this doom and gloom. Come on Luz, let’s get going!”
Luzien looked up at her with slight disbelief and shook his head. She’d always been like this. Her emotions sudden and intense like a flame roaring to life but extinguished just as swiftly.
His were different; like a wave slowly building in the depths of the ocean but impossible to stop once they hit the shore. It would take him all day to fully shake the darkness that had fallen over them. But he drew on Helia’s sunny optimism through their shared connection and took a moment to compose himself. And she, in turn did her best to not get swept up again by his lingering sorrow.
Wiping away the tears and rising to his feet he gave her a smile that she, of course, knew was fake. But she still appreciated the effort.
“You’re really impossible, you know?” he sighed.
“I know,” she replied with a smile, trying her best to flood her brother with her optimism. There was only the way forward. And no point crying about the past. As long as they had each other everything would be fine.
As they continued walking, they interlaced their fingers once more. The need for physical connection far outweighing the odd feeling of being at the wrong side of each other.
