Shael sits against Indra's side while watching the clouds roll by. The sounds of the waves has long since lulled her drake into a peaceful slumber. The pair don't usually bother with traveling by sea, but crossing the interior sea of Charon can be quite exhausting for the storm drake. They'd already flown all the way across Zeinav from Darkveil, so giving the drake a break seemed like a good idea. Of course, finding a ship captain willing to let the large creature aboard was no easy task within itself. Especially since all the sailors seem real nervous about some sea dragon that has been causing trouble near Capitol Landing. Shael managed to convince them that - should the nasty-tempered dragon show itself - her storm drake could spook it off. Lightning and water don't mix after all. That said, if the sea dragon does attack, she's more likely to just cut and run with Indra than try to defend the ship. Drakes and dragons may be related, but a drake is dwarfed in size, power, and intelligence by a true dragon. The teenager spends her time aboard the ship inspecting her nails and polishing her boot knife. She's a bit bored, but also anxious. She's been anxious ever since that stint into King's Valley with the weirdo knight. A certain knight's words linger in her head, keeping her up at night and making her more irritable than usual. Things are still rough in Darkveil despite almost a year has passed since that dumb jerk fellblood died. The family continues with their charade, even though more adventurers have figured out exactly what they were hoping to keep secret. The fact that assassins made an attempt on the family and two acquaintances of Zarius' showed up just in time to stop a second tragedy for the family is proof enough of that. The jig is up, yet now they refuse to accept it. It makes no sense to her. These people seem like the types to have plans for everything, putting their emotions second to logic. Yet how they're acting now is completely illogical. Maybe it was just denial all along and they just justified it so they didn't have to confront those ugly feelings. She doesn't know. She's not exactly close to any of them, and she still feels like an outsider amongst those in service to the family. One would think it would make leaving easy, but she's seen how these people work firsthand. There's no place that's safe from them if they decide to come after you. If they care enough to come after you that is. This whole journey she's on right now is to test just how far she can get from them. To test if she really is as trapped as she sometimes feels. Leandros' offer of a safe haven has been living in the back of her mind ever since that whole mess with the nibblenynh. If she manages to reach him, maybe that'd make the family think twice about trying to fetch her. That's assuming they'd think about coming after her at all. She lets out a long sigh and rubs the back of her neck. Not knowing where you stand with a crime family is such a pain. Sheathing her blade back in the holster built into her boot, she looks back out over the endless blue horizon. In a few more hours she'd hopefully have at least a little peace of mind. Given his relative closeness to the Luna Sea, Leandros had already made arrangements with the ship captain to arrive later. Haurach would have a lot more energy not having to have had travel as far. Her form would first pass over the ship looking like a pinhole in one of the clouds.
The knight had kept himself busy as of late, so regrettably he didn't have time to reach out to the young Shael though he had meant to. Between forming his own order, dealing with the daily hassle of nobility, and being mere weeks away from being a father, many things pulled at his attention. Add on top of that whatever the fae are getting up to and we are reaching the limits of how far he can stretch himself.
A glint off Haurach's scales would signal the dragon's approach. She banks around to start a tight circle down from the ship. Panic sets in a moment amongst the crew, but as she approaches it becomes clear she is not the sea dragon. Along her sides the caparison, colored in the Aurthurian livery, denotes she is not just a wild dragon. The rider on her back is another sign.
"Hail, is the captain available?" The knight pulls the dragon down to glide alongside the ship.
A nervous beat before the captain's doors swing open, "Bout time you arrived. I pay good money to the Crown to hire you knights. I don't want a scratch on this ship."
Leandros keeps his placid smile despite his annoyance, "Of course, I was told how important this cargo is. I will ensure its safe passage. This will not be the first dragon I've killed."
"Yeah, Yeah we all know about you and every other adventurer fighting Vulcadreus. I don't care, not a scratch!"
"Of course." Again he smiles as the captain huffs back to his quarters and slams the door.

Leandros’ appearance comes as a bit of a surprise to Shael, but maybe she shouldn’t given everything that’s been going on. The guy seems pretty respected and reliable, who wouldn’t want his protection when a dragon is causing trouble. Hells, wasn’t Leandros one of the heroes that took down that mountain-sized dragon that burst out of Mount Drakolt the previous year? This sea dragon must be like a minnow in comparison to that behemoth.
All this is to say that the captain’s attitude towards the knight is totally uncalled for. If she were in a fouler mood, she’d give him an earful. Though, as much as she tends to jump at the chance to pick a fight, she doesn’t want to give Leandros any trouble. The knight has been nothing but weirdly kind to her, so much so that he invited her to hide with her tail between her legs at his own home. She might be a pain, but she’s not so much of a brat to not be grateful for his compassion.
Shael waits quietly until the grumpy ship captain buggers back off to his quarters before approaching Leandros.
“Hey.” She leans against the rail of the ship. “Small world, huh?”
Indra raises her head from her nap and blinks lazily in the sunlight. The storm drake lets out a yawn which some of the crew give a weary look to. Her nostrils flare as she catches Haurach's scent and she lets out a chittering noise in greeting to the familiar drake.

There is the slightest drop in his expression when the captain turns his back to waddle back to his quarters. Leandros may be a proper knight, but his patience does have its limits. Nothing annoyed him more than people in positions of leadership who did nothing but bark orders and took no interest in leading from the front. It was either laziness or cowardice in his opinion.
That expression brightens when Shael approaches though, "It seems so, well met Shael. It is good to see you and Indra well again."
Haurach responds in kind to Indra as she glides beside the boat. Many in the crew are not quite sure how to act right now. One dragon was hard enough to deal with on the boat, now there's another one? There were some soft mutterings about territorial disputes or fights breaking out. It seems the idea of more domesticated drakes was still a new concept to many.
"Have you seen much sign of this sea dragon? I had wondered if this was some wild story that had gotten out of hand. I hadn't heard anything about it in this area, but things change quickly in this world, it would not surprise me to hear it is all true."
For the moment, the sea around them was fairly calm. Though a large merchant ship was likely to attract attention from a lot of different sources. Dragons have a scent for gold it seemed, if they wandered into its territory then the dragon would see that as an open invitation to add it to its hoard.

“Nah, no sign yet." Shael examines her nails while she leans against the rail. "Though I wouldn’t really know what to look for. Never encountered a full-blown dragon before. Drakes tend to be pretty good at avoiding their territory.”
Course she doesn't go out of her way to hunt down dragons herself either. She's not THAT dumb.
“It could all just be a hoax. Sailors are pretty easy to spook.” She gestures back to the nervous looks the crew are giving to the pair of docile drakes chittering back and forth between themselves.
“If it does show up, it’ll probably just punch a hole in the hull. An ambush from below just makes the most sense to avoid getting a cannon to the face.” Shael shrugs. For a snarky teenager who is quick to insults and anger, sometimes she has moments of actual logical thought and insight.
All in all, her time with Indra has clued her into how animals tend to behave. Not to say that dragons are at all comparable to racehorses or even their smaller scaly cousins. Dragons are much more intelligent, some even being smarter than the most prestigious mages. Creatures like that can be unpredictable because their instincts aren’t calling the shots.
She fiddles with the hem of her sleeve before glancing at Leandros.
"You really out here playing escort? Don't you have like...more important stuff to do?"
Sure, a dragon is a big threat, but this is just a single ship. It's not even a treasure fleet or a military vessel. It's just some cargo ship that has a handful of passengers on it. With Leandros being here, it makes her wonder if there's something more valuable stashed somewhere below deck.
Ah, hells.
Now she's thinking like that damned fellblood, constantly scheming and looking for every advantage of opportunity. Her expression sours and she looks pretty irked at how much Zarius' gang's way of thinking has rubbed off on her this past year.

"Sea dragons are not the typical quarry of the Aurthurian family, but dragons have a similar set of traits around them. You look for changes in the atmosphere...the environment around them...absence of local wild life." He crosses his arms over his chest as he looks out over the sea to take a look.
"For example, dragons with an affinity for lightning you can feel in the air...growing storm clouds, hairs standing up on end. Since this dragon calls the sea home, any thoughts on what to look for?"
He looks over to Shael for her thoughts, wanting to encourage her a bit. Big things like this he imagined fell outside Zarius' purview, so this would be a chance where she wouldn't be so reliant on his thought process. The additions about it being a hoax or attacking from below are already keen insights.
The knight gives a nod, "Attack from below is likely, so how do we look out for it?"
More space is given to Shael to think and strategize. He's already studied this for years as a child and teen, he had ideas on what to look for. Leandros was not interested in telling Shael what to do though, much like Theo, he figured it did no good to only give orders. What would happen when he wasn't there to give orders?
He should've expected this question. There really wasn't much of a reason to be taking this job, at least for someone of his stature. He had the sway to not have to do odd jobs...and yet.
"I might, but taking care of the people is just as important as anything else I could be doing. A simple escort like this is a small building block towards restoring hope to people...you and I know how chaotic things can be, adventurers are at the forefront of it...but these people? Sailors see strange sights, but many aren't ready to fight monsters, let alone dragons....by coming out here and see this ship to harbor safely. These people go home to their families...on top of that seeing us out here means they feel like they haven't been abandoned. Every person matters, so if I can do something to remind people of that....that's the most important thing I can be doing. I know your boss might call it naive and idealistic, but put simply I don't care. At the end of the day even if it is only one single person I help, that's important work."

Shael scrunches her nose a bit as she thinks. "Lack of fish, I guess. But that's hard to see in deep water. I don't know, maybe it gets really wavy?"
Her knowledge of what dragons can do is pretty limited, only really hearing tales of them from traveling bards or from older members of the Dvoryanin. She knows what Indra can do, so she's always just assumed dragons can do all that but on a bigger and more destructive scale. She's heard stories of dragons being able to use magic and even disguise themselves as people, but those tales seemed a bit conflated and dramatic to her. Maybe there's truth to them, but she wouldn't be able to say for certain without seeing it for herself.
She shrugs. "Do they make bubbles?" That's about the only warning sign she can think of for an attack out of the depths.
Generally speaking, sealife really is not something she knows a lot about. Hells, it wasn't until she boarded this ship that she learned that crabs can actually swim in addition to scuttling across the ground. Little buggers can do just about everything except fly.
As far as she's gotten, she really hasn't learned a whole lot about the world. She stopped asking questions a long time ago...
Listening to Leandros talk, yeah, he does sound pretty idealistic, but it's kind of nice to hear. Not many people can say those things and actually be true to them or make any sort of small difference in the world. Those that have the power and wealth to do those sorts of things don't tend to feel any sort of duty or responsibility either. Leandros is different though. He's genuine. Even a cynic like Shael can see that, and she might even admire him just a smidge for it.
"I guess I can understand that, but I'm sure there are other people out there that would at least be more grateful for your help." She huffs. "That captain is a real piece of work."
She shifts her weight to her other leg just as the ship suddenly lurches and comes to a full stop. Shael loses her balance and hits the deck with a thud and a loud "OOF!"
The crew are just as caught off guard by the ship's sudden standstill out in the middle of the open ocean. Once they recover from the abrupt stop, they look around befuddled as the sails are still full of wind that should be pulling them forward. One crewmate leans over the ship's railing and looks down at the water. The ship's hull is still cutting through the waves...or it appears to be, but what Leandros would notice is that the ship isn't gliding through them, but is rather being dragged backwards putting the whole ship in a tug between the backwards pull of the strange current and the forward push of the wind. There's shouting and a scramble from the crew as they try to reorient the sails to try and pull free of this abnormal phenomena.
Shael pulls herself back up to her feet and pushes her hair out of her face. "What the fuck is going on??"

"Those are all good theories, definitely things that would look out of place....I am not sure if they would make bubbles. I don't know enough about them to know if they have gills or if like whales they would have to come up for air from time to time."
In all honesty, he didn't have a great breadth of knowledge about anything in the sea. The ocean was a fascination, but never a place he studied. Given the way the world is going, he should shore up those knowledge gaps though. Patch together enough just to be able to respond to as many things as possible.
He smiles a bit at Shael's remark about gratefulness, "Thanks are appreciated, but if you do this for the fame and accolades you will tire of it quick because of people like that captain....I know what I am doing is right, whether or not I am thanked for it is secondary."
When the shock to the boat comes, Leandros catches himself against the mast. When things settled, he too joined the crew at the side to look over into the waters. Where is this going? He trails around the edge of the ship to follow the current until he gets to the back. Is this the dragon? If had grabbed on to the ship, there would be more damage than just being pulled backwards.
"Something is pulling us, the sails aren't going to help much! Someone take to the rear cannons, if we can hit whatever is pulling us it might set us free!"
Without the captain on deck, the sailors give a look to each other. There is a hesitation and confusion before the boat lurches again. This shake seemed to knock the sense into some of the crew as they start to prime and load the cannons. Leandros jogs back down to find Shael.
"Can you and Indra get to the air and see if you can spot anything in the water? The dragon might be using some spell to change the currents."

"Don't have to tell me twice."
Shael is more than eager to ditch being board the ship should it start to be dragged under by whatever has it stuck. She rushes over to Indra's side and hops onto the drake's back.
The storm drake snarls and launches herself off the side of the ship and unfurls her wings. She swoops out over the waves then circles around the ship to climb up higher into the air.
The crew scrambles about and rush to follow Leandros' instructions. The doors to the captain's quarters slam open as the man emerges with a look of anger on his face. He takes a quick glance about the deck before rushing up to the helm where one of his crew is fighting to keep the ship on course.
"What did we hit?"
"The knight said something has a hold of the ship, sir!"
"What??"
"We're arming the chase cannons!"
"Hurry up then! Blast whatever it is to pieces!"
Once Shael and Indra are high overhead, the drake rider glances down at the waters around the ship. Leandros' hunch is spot on as the waters are swirling in an unnatural way to keep the ship stuck in place. She can't make out anything swimming around the ship yet, but this seems pretty intentional and targeted.
Indra's nostrils flare as she tries to catch scent of anything odd. Her scales lift in a shiver as she catches wind of something. She points her snout up as the skies above the ship start to grow stormy rapidly. The low threatening rumble of lightning grows louder as the sky darkens and a cold rain begins to fall.

Well the storm clouds were not a welcome sign. Could this beast now come from above or below? It was going to be hard to tell either way. This was why Leandros was not actually a big fan of fighting dragons, when they get entrenched in an area they become even harder to fight.
They are smart and conniving creatures which meant they could hide traps like this. Leandros needed to pull its attention away from the boat. As the crew fires cannons into the water, Leandros heads to the side of the ship and leaps towards Haurach.
Without talking, she instinctually moves to catch the man[1] and the knight swings up into the saddle. He pulls the reins to quickly turn her around and head towards that whirlpool. A silvered tail hits and drags across the water like a fisher casting a line. A bold choice to become bait for a dragon.
"When it surfaces, be ready to strike!" He calls up to Shael. At this point, she was going to be the one he trusted in this situation. Green as she may be in some areas, she was more used to things like this than the average sailor.
A few passes happen with nothing going on before suddenly all of the action starts at once. Like an erupting volcano, the large sea dragon with coral-horns and barnacles along its scales the size of a house cat bursts from below. The sheer force and speed of its arrival send the drake and knight into a small spin, but they are able to pull out if it thankfully.[2]
The thing was about the size of the ship when it fully exited the water, snarling at the two smaller drakes it sees as challengers to its prize.
"Whelps the both of you, come back in a few centuries when you are more than a snack." Sea salt soaks the breath of the dragon as it stares the two down.

Shael glances up at the sky as the floodgates open and an icy cold rain pelts them.
"You gotta be kidding me," she huffs as she wipes the droplets from her face.
Looking back down and squinting through the maelstrom, she just makes out Leandros and his drake streaking across the rough water's surface.
"When it surfaces, be ready to strike!"
"Oh, yeah, sure! Can do!" Shael shouts back to Leandros. That seemed like a great plan and definitely wouldn't get them both killed.
She doesn't have time to be snarky as the sea rises and bursts to reveal their quarry. The dragon is massive and easily dwarfs both the drakes. Indra instinctively rears in the air and back peddles to increase the distance between herself and the full-fledged dragon.
"Easy, girl. Easy." Shael tries to reassure the drake and pulls her around to circle above the sea dragon.
As the pair swoop around behind the dragon, Shael whistles and taps her heels against Indra's side. The drake exhales a puff of ozone as its throat lights up from the base of its neck all the way to its head with an electric blue current. Indra then unleashes a streak of lightning at the back of the sea dragon. It looks like the bolt will meet its mark until the sea dragon twists in the air with unexpected flexibility, coiling backward as if swimming in the air itself before righting itself and opening its own mouth which bubbles and gurgles with seawater.
"Oh crap!" Shael wheels Indra into a sharp dive just as the dragon unleashes a torrent of water from its maw.
The pressurized water booms through the air at incredible speed and causes the air around the stream to be caught up in the current. Indra's wings are buffeted by the wind and she is knocked out of the dive and sent spiraling through the air towards the ocean's surface.
Shael holds onto the drake's harness for dear life as Indra rights herself in the air. The drake's tail just grazes the crest of a wave as the storm grows more and more treacherous with each passing second.
The dragon snorts and tracks Indra before glancing back at Haurach, more water gathering in the back of its throat for a second attack.

Below them the ship rocks and rolls with the waves, crew holding for dear life as they try not to get tossed off of the boat. Even when not facing direct assault, the sheer size of the dragon meant every movement put them at risk. Orders are shouted below as they work to try and contribute to the fight. There might not be much they can do, but if they can keep its attention split then they might just have a chance to let the drake riders make a difference.
Leandros has his eyes set on facing the dragon head on. As the water burbles in its throat, he pulls his cloak in front of his shield before snapping the reins on Haurach. The spray of water comes out with enough pressure to cut through normal metal, but thankfully the dragon leather of his cloak took much of the force out of it.[1]
The knight pulls the hussar lance out of its holster on the side saddlebag. The water jet hides much of his approach from the dragon. Right as they come out of the stream he lets out a roar of a scream as he thrusts the lance forward.
The dragon was quick enough to prevent the fatal blow, but the way the lance breaks[2] and the sheer force of Leandros' strike[3] leaves a deep wound. As Leandros passes the dragon, a long gash wound is left on the side of its neck. It is not deep, but it is bleeding as the dragon cries out.
It snarls and swipes its tail at Leandros, trying to knock him out of the sky. The tail thunks against his shield[4] sending a sharp pain up his arm. He may be strong enough to block the strike, but that doesn't make it any softer.

Leandros holds the dragon's attention long enough for Indra to climb back up into the sky above it. The dragon pays them no mind, more concerned with the well-armored knight clearly brandishing a weapon.
Shael's a bit shook. The adrenaline pumping through her body at least distracts her from the cold rain soaking through her clothes. She wipes her face on her sleeve and blinks through the raid down at Leandros and the Sea Dragon. Her attention is drawn back up to the sky as a streak of lightning ripples through the underside of the clouds.
"Okay. Okay. We got this, girl. Let's give it something to chase."
She gives Indra a solid pat on the side of her neck before throwing her weight forward as the drake folds its wings and starts to dive back toward the dragon. Indra's throat glows with that blue light once more before she fly-by strikes the sea dragon in the back of the head with a bolt of electricity.
The sea dragon snarls, more annoyed than anything else as the electricity ripples across its scales and disperses. Of course a dragon that can summon storms wouldn't be so vulnerable to electricity. But the stunt does the job as the dragon starts to chase after the insolent welp of a drake that dares to take pot shots at it.
Indra's a racing drake, so she's very quick for a drake of her size. That said, there's no way she can outrun a dragon in a straight-shot sprint. Indra bobs and weaves from side to side to avoid the sea dragon's jaws and claws as it tries to swat the annoying fly out of the sky.
Shael holds on tight, her knuckles aching from the intensity of her grip while she keeps her body tucked flat against Indra's back. She glances back over her shoulder just as the dragon's claws narrowly miss clipping one of Indra's wings. Being this close to such a massive dragon is terrifying and her heart races in her chest. Looking back ahead, she blinks away more rain drops just in time to realize that the dragon is chasing them back towards the ship.
"Shit! Indra, bank!" The drake rider throws her weight to the side, pulling Indra in sharp bank before they slam right into the ship.
The dragon's eyes dart after the drake and its jaws part to unleash another pressurized blast of water after them. The blast grazes Indra's wing and drags the drake into the torrent while Shael is thrown from the saddle. Both disappear from sight as the dragon turns its attention back to the ship as it looms over it and the crew screams in panic.

It is hard to keep track of everything in the fever pitch of this battle. The sheets of rain and thrashing of the dragon make maintaining eyelines difficult. Trying to fight while mounted only further complicates things, especially as Lee tries to balance attacking the dragon and defending the ship.
There is also his impulse to look out for Shael as well. She is more than capable, but Leandros wouldn't be who he was if he didn't worry about his friends. He pulls on the reins of Haurauch to bank back just in time to see the rider get shot out of the sky.
"SHAEL!" He stands in the saddle, his roar nearly as loud as the storm itself in that brief moment.
A snap of leather sends Haurauch into a dead sprint in that direction. She's certainly not as fast as Indra, but she can try. Well, time to do something dangerous and hope his wife doesn't hear about it later. Leandros shifts in the saddle to perch off the side as they pass over the dragon.
"Keep after Shael, save her and Indra if you can." Haurauch knows the plan through their telepathic bond, having her own thoughts about it. Through training and time she's learned to just trust the knight in a fight.
As they fly over the head, the Lion of the Landing steps off Haurauch to make himself into a rudimentary missle. He positions the halberd in front of his chest, spear tip pointed downward, and falls. There is a noise of surprise from the dragon as it finds its neck pierced from a hard downward impact.[1]
The impact sends the dragon's head into the ship, smashing parts of the bannister and cracking the deck. It struggles and writhes a moment as Leandros attempts to hold it in place for as long as he can.
In the storm, Haurauch does her best to find the plummeting Shael as best she can. It is not like she is a trained scent hound and after losing eye contact, this is more of a guessing game than anything. The dragon eventually spots a little speck falling from the sky and tries to zoom towards her. Haurach aims a breath to try and freeze some of the water beneath the falling elf.[2] It isn't an ideal landing, but this is better than drowning in a maelstrom.

Shael hurtles through the air before she skips across the top of a cresting wave. It slows her down enough that when the water freezes she doesn’t break every bone in her body as she slams into the hardened surface. She still hits it pretty hard and slides around on it limply as the ice flow is rocked by the rough waves.
The sound of the storm, the roar of the drakes and the dragons, the crash of the waves, all of it goes silent for Shael as her world goes black. The sensation of cold against her skin remains though, a bone chilling familiar sensation that pulls her back to a place she’s been before. The crack of thunder turns into the sharp sound of glass breaking across a polished floor and an open palm slapping across her face.
“Careless girl. How many times must you be told not to leave your room?”
“I-I-” Shael’s voice catches in her throat. It sounds so small and meek as it echoes through frigid halls.
“Silence. I did not give you permission to speak.”
She bites her lip, the taste of iron seeping from her cheek. Her eyes dare not look at the shadow that looms over her and the remnants of a shattered vase strewn across the mirror-like floor. She sees herself, younger, smaller, weaker, alone and afraid to even breathe wrong.
“Begone. Rid yourself from my sight this instance.”
The words sting and chill her to the bone. There’s no warmth, no care, no love in those words. They make her feel numb and frozen in place, unable to escape or cry out for help. The shadows close in once more. It’s so cold…
A ways away, Indra resurfaces from underwater after having been blasted out of the air. The drake struggles to swim as the storm rages and the waves crash overhead and push them back under. She looks around in a panic for her rider, but only sees the ship through the storm. Desperate to get out of the water, she starts swimming towards the ship as Leandros pins it to the vessel.
The crew on board panics as the knight skewers the angry dragon to the ship. There’s significant damage to the ship’s hull as the sea dragon rakes its talons against it to try and free itself from Leandros’ lance.
“It’s tearing the ship apart!” Shouts one of the crewmates in distress.
