Nestled in a large clearing between a lake and Moonveil Forest, surrounded by fields of grass bordered by a short wall of piled stones, Beist's Animal Sanctuary sits at the end of a dirt path.
At first glance, one might think the house was built for a noble. From the sheer size of it, it must belong to someone of obscene wealth and power. However, on a closer inspection, it would be apparent that's not quite the case. The entire house is tall enough to be two or three stories tall, but is actually only one floor. The height of the roof is just a requirement for its unusually large owner to be able to walk around comfortably.
The house is simple construction, with walls made of stone halfway up and wooden siding stained a warm, orangish brown the rest of the way. Wooden beams on each corner and the frames of the windows and door a darker, contrasting brown. The enormous front door is a matching dark wood color and carved with an oak tree pattern with some glass windows built in to appear to be nestled amongst the leaves. The windows are glass with wooden shutters on either side. Above the door, a round stained glass window depicts a griffon in flight. The roof of the house is made of grey slate tiles that resemble giant snake scales.
One one side of the house, a large greenhouse sticks out, surrounded by a garden of herbs and vegetables. Several different types of tree also dot the large garden here and there, each one providing something that can be used in alchemy, from fruits to nuts. The garden is organic in design, with circular garden beds circling the trees filled with plants that prefer the leafy shade. A very wide brick path meanders from a door in the greenhouse, through the garden, and down to the lake shore. Other features of the garden include a very tall wooden pergola with grape vines growing up it and across its beams with some chairs and a small table set up beneath it, and a stone circular well with a wooden cover over it. Down by the lake shore, a stone firepit is dug into the sand and there's a wooden dock leading out into the water.
Attached to the opposite side of the house is a long extension with more large doors, though these are all much less elaborate. Simple barn doors and windows alternate along the extension. Some are open more often than others, and when they are, it can be seen that these doors all lead to a stable of sorts. It would be more accurate to describe them as a wing of the house comprised entirely of private bedrooms for Beist's many larger animal companions. From the stable, the animals have easy access to the fields and the forest.
Inside the house, the ceilings are over twenty feet tall at the shortest and even higher beneath the very tip of the pointed roof, with thick beams stretching across twenty feet up for support. From these beams, several hooks hold up strings of bundled herbs and mushrooms left to dry. The house is mostly one large room that is a combined living space, kitchen, and eating area. In the back, one door leads to Beist's bedroom, another leads to the washroom, a third door leads to the stables, and a fourth door leads to Beist's personal alchemy workshop which also has a door leading directly into the greenhouse.
In the living room, a large bookshelf takes up nearly an entire wall, only leaving gaps where the windows are and some house plants are placed. A large, sturdy, cushioned chair takes up a corner with a side table next to it and a window providing ample reading light. Some more couches and stools are also placed around atop a soft, green rug. On the opposite wall from all the bookshelves, a stone fireplace provides the house with warmth. Above it, taking up the entire mantle, a large wood-carved stele made by Del depicting a menagerie of creatures is prominently displayed, each beast representing one of Beist's animal companions. Some parts of the stele look like they're made of a different wood, or the grain doesn't line up, indicating these companions were added later. Who knows how large it will get if it keeps growing with ever addition to Beist's family?
The kitchen is comprised of wooden butcher block counters atop green-painted wooden cabinets, an iron wood-burning stove and oven that look large enough to comfortable fit a person inside, and a large, green-painted metal ice box that could fit a whole cow which is built into the wall. Built into the counter in front of the window is a soapstone basin with a plug in the bottom to allow it to drain into a bucket underneath for disposal. A majority of the hanging herbs and mushrooms in the room are above the kitchen area, and these are used in cooking. The alchemical herbs are kept in the workshop.
The dining area is simple, with a large wooden table and wooden chairs to sit at. There are a some house plants in clay pots along the walls. A few decorations are also displayed on the wall along with Beist's acceptance letter from the Golden Consortium displayed in a glass and wood frame. A small vase to display assorted flowers sits in the center of the table. Also along the wall are several food bowls for Beist's smaller companions to eat out of easily.
Beist's bedroom is cozy, with a soft rug and a bed big enough for the giant man to be comfortable. There are no windows in this room, making the room reminiscent of a cave. A wooden wardrobe in the far corner holds his clothing and a locked chest sits at the foot of his bed.
Beist's workshop is primarily used for alchemy, with shelves and cabinets taking up nearly all of the available wall space above counters and more cabinets. A table takes up the center of the room, with alchemical equipment spread all across it. Glass vials, beakers, tubes, bottles, jars. Metal frames hold them above burners and lamps. A small meal cauldron takes up some table space while a much larger one sits on the floor in the corner of the room. Nearly the entire ceiling is covered with hanging bundles of herbs, mushrooms, peppers, sticks, bulbs, and any other dried ingredient needed for alchemy. Some of the shelves are filled with tools and containers full of different ingredients, while some are full of books, notes written by Beist of his experiments and findings. The walls of this room, unlike the rest of the house, are entirely made of stone with no windows.
Inside of the greenhouse, it's very similar to the garden, a semi-organic construction and placement of the different types of plants. A single, small apple tree sits in the center with a small fountain placed as close to it as possible without causing harm to the tree. Planter boxes line the glass walls. Up in the rafters, a little shaded platform is built with what looks like a cat bed on it.
Even when Beist is gone, usually travelling in his wagon, his house is crawling with a variety of critters. Many of his animal companions choose to stay home instead of joining him on his travels now that they have a place to call their own, but they are always happy to see him return. The stables house the largest of them, but some of the smaller ones make their own areas in the rest of the house.
Cookie the Flitten also prefers to be around the plants, pollinating them and making her magical honey. Her home is in a birdhouse hanging above the door leading out into the garden.
Haralson the Crab Apple lives in the apple tree, blending in with the bright red fruit thanks to their natural disguise ability. He drops into the fountain nearby whenever he needs some moisture.
Tico the Songbird Griffon also has his own birdhouse, but his is attached to the wall above the door leading into the rest of the house. He wanted to live in the apple tree, but Haralson was too territorial.
Simon the Mimic Moth. He lives in the greenhouse, but he doesn't have one spot he keeps to. Simon moves around, blending in to be practically invisible, and hiding amongst the different plants. Beist has to check to make sure he's not there before he picks any of his herbs.
Arson the Fire Pixie. Thankfully, his name isn't indicative of any tendencies. He has good control over his fire magic and hasn't burnt anything down. He always accompanies Beist on his travels, but at home, he likes to be in the greenhouse. His favorite spot to sleep is in the bed of fairy roses.
Prickle the Cat-cus. With his own little clay planter pot filled with sand, he likes to sleep and sunbathe here and looks like a cactus in a pot in the greenhouse. His disguise might be given away on occasion by the toys in the pot with him.
Pebble the Manul Tuftbird. This fluffy winged cat likes to prowl around the house like she owns the place and fly up into the rafters where she plays with the hanging bundles of herbs. Her thick coat makes her very warm, sometimes too warm, leading her to often spend time in Sorbet's room in the stables to keep cool.
Bull the Vampire Bat prefers the dark, and as such, likes to sleep the day away in Beist's bedroom. When Beist is home, this also makes it easy for him to eat breakfast while Beist is going to bed. When Beist is away, he heads to the forest to find some blood to drink.
Paprika the Tukuarôzi. This little nightmare eater lives in Beist's bedroom, keeping his dreams pleasant. When Beist is away, she has her own little nook to nestle in beneath Beist's bed.
Flicker the Candle Golem. This little walking candle spends most of their time inactive, but makes a great nightlight following Beist around to help him get around.
Dash the Doorturtle goes where he wants when he wants. How does he manage to get everywhere so fast when he's a turtle? No one knows.
Uno, Duces, and Trip, the Dirtlings. These little guys also live in a jar when Beist takes them with him on his journeys, but at home, they like to help him while he's in the workshop. These little assistants might not be that good at very complex tasks like alchemy, but they can bring him a spoon when all four of his hands are full.
Spooky the Skewt lives in a special home in Beist's workshop designed to collect his slippery mucus into a jar for use in alchemy. The home is comfortable, and the music is easily able to be scooped out of it whenever Beist comes home. Spooky also likes to travel around the rest of the house and the greenhouse, taking a dip in the fountain.
Dora the Griffon. She always accompanies Beist on his travels and is the one who always pulls his wagon. When she's home, she has her own room in the stables with a door opening out toward the forest for her to fly out and over. She likes to go hunting out in the forest and is easily able to handle herself.
Leon the Woolful. He usually accompanies Beist on his travels, since he wants to learn to be tough and go out and see the world. However, when he's home, he's glad his room's door opens out into nice safe fields of grass for him to graze in. Beist sheers him in the spring to keep him cool and collects the wool for alchemy and for knitting gifts for his friends.
Moe the Lightning Fox. He used to be much smaller, but after a big growth spurt, he needed to move into a room in the stables. The corners of his room are lined with lightning rods that collect the discharged energy into batteries. Beist doesn't actually know what he might be able to use these for, but until then, he can let Astrid use them in her lightning forge.
Banana the Eel Hound isn't particularly large, but he prefers his own room since he spends most of his time swimming in the lake nearby. His room is made to be waterproof, a place where he can shake himself dry and wipe his feet before coming into the rest of the house. It's funny to see him run in from the lake to dry off, only to run through the house and dive right into the greenhouse fountain, then run out into the garden and back into his room to dry off again. It's never=ending sometimes. An ouroboros of wet.
Chili the Magma Ignalis has a special room in the stables designed to be fireproof. He sometimes falls asleep in the oven though.
Calzone the Obsidian Wyrm. Another one that needs a fireproof room thanks to the magma drool.
Pretzels the Quetzalcoatl. Always follows Beist on his travels, but he has his own room in the stables. He used to be much smaller, but after a little help from Astrid, Pretzels is much larger, his spirit transferred into a golden golem body. Even the stable room might be a little small for the thirty foot long winged serpent. He sends most of his time stretching his wings and soaring around though, so it's alright when he's not demanding a bigger, fancier room.
Sticky the Greater Dragoonfly. Sticky is too big to have his own place to live anywhere else inside the house, but he likes to spend most of his time out of his room in the stables and flying around in the garden or over the lake. He pollinates only the largest of the plants in Beist's garden, the dragoonfly being too large to pollinate most of them.
