Name: Harper Quinlin
Race: Human
Skin Tone: Light Tan
Eye Color: Amber
Height: 5'6
Weight: 120lbs
Hair Color: Red
Age: 26
Appearance:
Harper has lightly tanned skin, amber eyes, and short, curly red hair. His build is lithe and wiry, with a gaunt frame and face. His face is full of life at all times. His eyes are large and expressive with thin brows above them. His hair has been shaved on the sides and the top allowed to grow out into a mess of tight curls that hang down to just above his ears. He has trouble growing a beard and so has stuck to a thin mustache and soul patch combo. He has a pronounced chin and cheek bones with a smooth jaw line. He often wears a thoughtful face that frequently shifts as ideas and cons enter his mind mid conversation. When masquerading under an alias his look can be drastically different.
Clothes:
He has a fondness, enforced by poverty, for simple outfits. He can at times stretch himself and through means unmistakably illegal 'acquire' fancier clothing. His usual garb is made up of a black vest over a white button up shirt with a pair of dark gray trousers fastened with suspenders over a pair of worn leather boots. He wears a long leather coat, too big for his size, if weather allows. Atop his head is often a dark grey flop hat from under which his curly red hair peeks. His clothing can often change depending on the particular circumstances he finds himself in. When masquerading under an alias his look can be drastically different.
Personality:
Harper's life has left him with a disposition towards mistrusting others and institutions. While he is outwardly obedient and friendly his mind is often searching for the lies and schemes of those he interacts with and attempting to think one step ahead of them. He has struggled with friendly relationships as a result of this, often misconstruing a simple saying or way of saying as part of a scheme against him. When confronted with a situation of stress or anxiety, especially in social settings, he will never appear outwardly uncomfortable and truly excels in these areas. Pressure is Harper's most powerful motivator, and he often feels unmotivated if some stake or play is not on the table. Due to this constant need for challenge he will often seek trouble for the sake of overcoming it.
When he develops trust or affection for someone he will often become protective of them, extending himself and losing his composure if he feels their safety or wellbeing requires it. His most prevalent fear is that his cons and lies will somehow effect those around him who are undeserving of suffering. When this does happen he tends to overcorrect and make things worse.
History:
Harper was born to a poor family in the Ashlands living in Darkveil City. He came into the world as the 8th child of the family who would go on to have 4 more children, totaling 12 siblings all together. His family was forced into all manner of employment due to these circumstances including crime. The criminal activity of his family members soon pushed out the other methods for scrounging by and his entire clan became known for their shady dealings. This helped them to fit in perfectly well in Darkveil City, but it also made them just another of the city's criminal groups. Life as a petty gangster was unpredictable, his family would go from horrific poverty to extravagance with little warning. Though they tended to stay poor more often than not.
As time passed and he grew to adolescence the family's criminal activity had started to earn them a healthy allotment of enemies. These enemies and the inherent danger of their occupations led to the family... shrinking... so to speak. As siblings, his mother, and many uncles and aunts were killed off Harper grew dissatisfied with the lifestyle and sought to escape from it. To this end he fought to ignore his family's dealings and moved away to a different section of the world. Sol City.
While living in Sol City as a youth he worked as an apprentice to the owner of a bookstore, learning and reading filled most of his spare time. Also in this time he met a young woman with whom he fell in love, Aren. The two grew closer and closer, eventually promising themselves to one another. The future looked bright for Harper and Aren and the shop owner began to discuss possibly handing the shop off to him eventually. Everything changed when a stranger entered the shop close to closing time and addressed Harper by his full name, the one thing he'd tried most to distance himself from. Threatening to reveal his criminal background and worse, claiming to have one of his younger siblings as a hostage, the man demanded that he help them in robbing the store. Forced to comply to protect the family he'd left and the life he'd built Harper assisted in the heist. The job went south though, and in the process of robbing the shop the men killed the shop owner and left harper to take the blame.
The wake of this left him imprisoned and branded a criminal once more. His criminal record and the murder/heist he'd taken part in led to a sentence of execution. Aren, who'd been aware of the whole deal, came to his rescue. Leaving him a set of magical items for which she'd taken out massive loans to acquire. A magical quill and bead bracelet. The two combined to allow him to escape the prison and Sol City. The two decided to separate for the time being, as the combined heat from debtors and the law itself hung over their heads. Aren went off on a ship to a faroff land, hoping to lie low til her debtors forgot her existence. Harper, using his inborn charm and wit, sought to unveil the cretins who'd left him in this mess. Seeking to once and for all earn his freedom and leave behind the curse of his family name.
To do so, he used his quill and his words. His life's focus turned to bringing criminals, organizations, and officials that took advantage of common people to justice. Hoping that one day, he could reunite with his lost love, and settle down in some quiet hamlet once and for all.
