Non Player Character Guide
Non Player Characters (NPCs) are characters that exist in the world of Charon but are not controlled or owned by any specific player. There are two types of over arching NPCs when it comes to how they are used and what they are used for. General NPCs refer to characters that exist in the world but do not come with a mechanical advantage that benefits your own character. These can be things like shop owners, tavern keeps, city guards, or most kinds of villains and monsters you may come up against while questing. Private NPCs are characters that are owned, controlled and benefit your own character. These are things like side kicks, squires, attendants or any kind of pet and mount. Listed below you can find a better explanation of how these two types of NPCs work and the rules that govern them
General NPCs
General NPCs refer to any character that can show up in a given interaction but is not directly owned by a specific player. Most of these are self explanatory, general people who show up in a normal environment, like shop owners and bar tenders. But these can also refer to specific people, like family members, allies, enemies or creatures. The general rule of thumb with these types of NPCs is that they are considered to be neutral towards your character, able to be controlled and manipulated by any player.
This allows any player to add, remove or control a general NPC, keeping the flow of a topic going and adding an element of unpredictability. A primary example being, two player controlled characters enter a cave and see three goblins. These goblins are general NPCs, and while they may try to fight or run, they do not belong to any specific member. This means one, or all players can control any of the goblins, dictating what they do and how they act. The same goes for friendly general NPCs, such as city guards or traveling merchants. Because anyone can control any of the NPCs, it is normally best to coordinate and work with the other players involved to smoothly determine the direction and flow of the topic.
Private NPCs
A private NPC refers to any character that is owned by a member but is not their primary role playing character. These NPCs are always earned or obtained from a secondary source, such as a shop or prestige class. Private NPCs are further separated into two smaller categories, Minions and Pets. Minions are often times more intelligent characters that work for you or have aligned themselves with you. This can be a squire, a set of crew members, or an assassin hired to assist you. Pets on the other hand are almost always animals or creatures that are owned by you.
Private NPCs belong to you, the member, and as such can only be controlled or manipulated by you. If a private NPC is in a topic with your character, no other player is allowed to control any aspect of that NPC, be it their actions, personality or outcomes of any interaction. Think of private NPCs as a living weapon or item, owned and controlled by you. Unlike general NPCs that just exist, private NPCs will always serve your character first, obeying their commands and working towards the same goal.
Private NPCs come with a limit however, a restriction on how many are allowed to travel with you at any given time. It can be difficult to enter some areas, be it towns or dungeons, with larger crowds of people. Restricting the total number of Private NPCs you can take with you also helps keep topics clean, clear and easy to understand. There is no limit to how many private NPCs you can own, allowing you to buy or earn as many as you would like. However there will be a restriction on how many can join you in a given topic. When starting a topic you intend to bring NPCs into with you, you must openly state in the beginning post which private NPCs have come along with you.
While there is a general baseline of how many private NPCs one can take with them, there will sometimes be ways to increase this cap, sometimes earned from classes or abilities, or even sometimes attached to the NPC itself. Listed below is the base line NPC cap for characters with no added upgrades or additional features.
Private NPC's allowed to enter a topic with
3 Minions
2 Pets
Equipping NPCs
Some NPCs can be equipped or outfitted with gear, weapons and items, allowing them to be useful in battle or out in the field. In most cases what an NPC is allowed to carry will be outlined in the place they were earned, such as a Prestige Class. However a base guide has been created to better detail what some things can carry.
Minions
Minions will operate sort of like miniature player characters, they can carry items equal to the 12 point weight system, meaning they can start a topic with a specific amount of items, equal to 12 points of weight. This limit can not be increased and will stay at 12. Some minions from specific classes may get further upgrades to their items, but this is a case by case situation.
Pets
Pets have different rules when it comes to what they can carry. Normally a pet can only be given clothing, things that can be worn on its person. This does not apply to armor unless specifically stated. A pet can only wear one item of clothing, such as boots, a cape or a belt. Some classes or abilities may increase what a pet is able to wield.
