The Beanies were hanging out of a backpack with safety harnesses carefully hidden underneath the ornate, hand-sewn outfits they were all but forced to wear as part of their disguises so that they could get inside the Arcane Academy without arousing suspicion. Wait, no, that wasn't accurate. The more accurate description was that they were supposed to pretend to be magically-infused dolls, and their outfits were more so that the child bringing them in didn't seem any more out-of-place due to the Beanies' added presence. The child was a total enigma even with the Beanies' open-mindedness in terms of eccentricities. The only name they'd give the Beanies was Nemo, and well, they met one another when the latter casually Beanienapped them out of nowhere and basically threatened to sell them to the highest bidder if they didn't agree to playtime. They mostly played hide-and-seek and tag in an obscenely large mansion that was largely devoid of people for some reason. It was weird, and a lot more hectic than it sounded because Nemo regularly blinked all over the place, making dealing with Nemo a pretty frustrating experience given their little sizes. And the worst part? Their expression rarely deviated from neutral, leaving the Beanies unsure on what their Beanienapper was even thinking. Even Demony, who ended up partaking in the same activities after the Beanies pointed out its presence and was summarily catnapped as well, was equally lost on this one. Anyway, it was after a few more of these forced sessions that Nemo would demand something else. The Beanies hadn't much to work with, since the servants would all refuse to even acknowledge Nemo's presence, let alone theirs, but they were certain Nemo's family was ultra rich and probably quite influential since wealth generally correlated to power. Needless to say, the Beanies could only tilt their heads when Nemo asked if the Beanies knew what they wanted.
And that was how the Beanies found themselves now hanging out of the side of a backpack like little accessories while Nemo walked down the hallway leading to their class. The piercing glares and hushed whispers from the surrounding students did not help the Beanies' insecurities in the slightest, even if the words seem to be mainly directed at Nemo. Demony, in the meantime, was sandwiched between a stupidly thick tome and Nemo's back inside the backpack, and could barely enjoy the negativity wafting from the Beanies. Elsewhere in the Arcane Academy, there was something happening that was about to turn the Beanies' school trip upside-down.
Quest Name: ;Roaming the Halls Participants: Two or more Location: Arcane Academy Post Requirements: 6 post per person, 200 words per post Reward: +1 Renown, Choice of 2 Common crafting materials Description: Mages from the Arcane Academy have been asking for help in dealing with an experiment gone wrong. A couple of students had been experimenting with a few Ivorling's which have become animated and are now rampaging around the school. 6 foot golems made of pure ivory have been roaming the school causing mayhem and chaos, but have not been deadly yet. While having their normal abilities, it seems the students also built in anti magic, making them immune to most common magics. The academy needs people to come in, track down the golems and render them docile before they cause rreparable damage.

The Arcane Academy has its fair share of odd happenstances. From attacks by mage slayers to keeping information for the Mage’s Guild, Astrid is well aware of its prestigious halls and how much she absolutely does not appear to belong in them. But as a member of the Mage’s Guild, she can stroll through confidently. It’s not like anyone could throw her out if they wanted to. Besides, they need help with some golems running rampant!
It makes sense that students of the Academy would be practicing Golemancy. It’s a fairly recent subject given how Arcanatek was only recently revealed to the world. Being someone who fashioned her very own golem (and needs to re-fashion the thing after the beating it took from the fae queen), Astrid figures she could be a good help to shutting these ivory behemoths down. Depending on how they’re made, it could be easy or extremely difficult. No matter! Anti-magic or not, she’s got her fists and hammers, so if worst come to worse, she’ll just beat the things into rubble.
Because of the wandering golems, the halls are quieter than usual, which means that seeing someone walking through them unprotected is a surprise. “‘Scuse me!” Astrid calls to Nemo upon seeing them. “Ya shouldn’t be wanderin’ the halls by yerself. Unless yer ready ta run into the Ivorlings or whatever they’re called. In which case… carry on.” The half-dwarf knows better than to judge someone by how they look, but she’s still seen so few adventurers her own age that she’s still cautious when she sees someone alone.

Nemo simply ignored the child and walked on, their expression not even changing in the slightest. The Beanies, on the other hand, felt like they were missing some pertinent knowledge.
"Ivorlings?" Goody asked. Star looked around once more and realized there was nobody else except Nemo and the girl who had just given them a warning at this point. Oh dear. Whatever an Ivorling was, it could not be good news.
"Nemo? Could you please stop for a moment?" Star put out a request. Nemo either didn't hear it or did not see fit to respond, as they kept moving onward without so much as the slightest shift in their momentum.
"""Nemo~~~!""" The trio were now flailing about, trying to get their carrier's attention, but it seemed they were dead set on moving forward, uncaring for whatever danger laid ahead. Sure enough, not even the loud stomps of the ivory golems or the trembling surfaces could prevent them from walking on, even if they did slow down somewhat, given that they were a short, skinny child unready for the harsh situation they were in right now. Then, the Beanies would hear the sounds of a crackling wall, followed by the sounds of sand and rubble crashing to the ground and finally, a loud thud booming on the floor a few paces behind them. Goody had managed to slip out of their clothes and unbuckled the harness by then, and noticing another ivory leg making a swing at Nemo, Goody jumped in front of them without hesitation, shouting "Nemo, run!" with their hands extended. A foolish act, certainly, but Goody felt strongly compelled to try to at least get their Beanienapper to change their mind.

“Aye, Ivorlings,” Astrid confirms, though she looks puzzled because Nemo hasn’t paid her any mind nor did she see their mouth moving. In fact, the voice sounded like it was coming from… Oh gods, are those little golems too? Weird, squishy golems that talk?
Suddenly, the ground rumbles, and Astrid knows that means it’s time for trouble. One of the Ivorlings, exactly as the report described, crashes through the wall as if it doesn’t even realize that the wall is there. It just plows through it without a care in the world. Without hesitation, it makes a strike at the other kid, and one of the little soft constructs throws itself in the way.
Astrid isn’t convinced that will stop a golem’s attack, and she teleports[1] between the golem and Goody/Nemo/the others to redirect the strike with her hammer.[2] The foot beams her in the chest, and Astrid stumbles back but keeps her footing.[3,4]
“Oof! Okay, so ya clearly ain’t know nothin’ about the wild golems walkin’ around here, so ya shouldn’t just stand there! Watch out!”

""Thanks, miss!"" Star and Chili, having freed themselves from their constraints too, gave a genuine word of gratitude as they made their way to Goody to drag them away. "What was Goody-plush thinking!?" Star couldn't help but admonish their hopelessly reckless partner. Then they noticed Nemo was already elsewhere[1], simply watching, while Demony was freed from the backpack. It was but a little cat-shaped shadow however, and would be near-useless in this situation other than carrying the Beanies around. It begrudgingly offered its back for riding, unprepared to lose its only form of sustenance just yet. However, before the Beanies could hop on, yet another ivory golem would crash through the wall from the side and its pointed leg would descend towards the Beanies and Demony.
"Goody-plush! The gargoyle!" Star barked frantically. Goody pulled out the chess piece[2] from their hat and proceeded to fumble it around their hands comically in a panic a number of times before catching it proper, leaving just barely enough time for the three Beanies to hold them together and chant, """O' stone gargoyle! Protect us from harm!""" The chess piece would expand forward, taking the blow and be slightly damaged as it was caught mid-transformation before its continued expansion to the same height as the Ivorling pushed the latter away. It then threw a punch at the Ivorling in retaliation, sending the ivory golem reeling. The quartet then collectively decided it was in their best interest to climb up the gargoyle as it was probably the safest place right now.

Okay, so the kid disappeared, probably for the better, and now these tiny plush construct-things are riding on a…shadow? No time to overthink it, Astrid! Using all her might, she shoves the Ivorling that struck her back, and it stumbles with heavy footfalls that would absolutely not feel good if they landed on one’s foot.
“Little thin’s, any idea what’s got these thin’s so–” Suddenly, a massive protective gargoyle springs up between the Beanies and the second Ivorling. While it comes as a surprise, Astrid quickly sees that the Beanies are using it, so it’s safe for now. The Ivorling takes advantage of Astrid being distracted and socks her across the head.[1] Her helmet rattles against her head, leaving her ears ringing a bit, but she’s otherwise unphased. “Ouch, ya stupid hunk a’ bone!”
Summoning a second, much larger hammer into her right hand,[2] it’s almost impossible to see as its surface looks like crystalline ice. Lightning crackles off of its surface, and Astrid rushes forward to deliver two quick strikes to the Ivorling in an attempt to knock it down. Each blow cracks the ivory surface but doesn’t quite keep the thing from falling. Magical runes across the golem’s exterior spark, some of their connections interrupted in some way. The magic of her hammers seems to have no effect on the golems, just the brute force of her strikes.
“It’d probably be best if we didn’t smash these thin’s ta pieces,” she finally says while the Ivorling gets its bearings again. “That’d be the easy thin’ ta do, but I’m bettin’ this was someone’s homework gotten out a’ hand!”

"""Okay!""" The Beanies shouted a reply, though they were unsure what they could really do. Well, the Ivorling seemed to be a quadruped, if about the same size as the gargoyle they were on. Maybe there was something there they could work with? Well, the Beanies were going to have to figure that out, fast, since it appears that the Ivorling they were dealing with has suddenly redirected its attention to Nemo, who hasn't moved an inch since blinking away. """Nemo!""" The Beanies shouted collectively, frantically waving their arms all over and giving mixed messages on what exactly they should be doing, but all of them were clearly concerned for the child's safety. The number of expletives running through Demony's being increased exponentially. Its life would be that much easier if these accursed bears weren't such woefully powerless creatures who desire so strongly to do good despite, if not precisely because of their weakness. It jumped down the gargoyle and made a beeline for Nemo, managing to tackle the bastard kid in the face and get a few claws in, sending the child falling backwards before the Ivorling leg swept rightwards and sent Demony flying and crashing against the wall. Why did it even decide to do this? Oh. Right. Obscenely wealthy kid. The pragmatic machinations within it screeched that something about this one would be horribly dangerous for their collective survival in the long run if not reined in. """Demony!""" The Beanies squealed, worrisome as ever. "Um, Mr.? Ms.? Gargoyle! Pull its hind legs and sit on its back!" Goody ordered and the gargoyle did precisely that, laying down its entire weight upon the Ivorling and pinning it to the ground, the latter now impotently flailing its legs around trying to get away. They had no idea what to do from there though.

It’s a little tough for Astrid to focus on the man-sized hunk of angry ivory wanting to punch her guts out and keep an eye on another child plus three– er, four? –little bears. Their gargoyle’s weight seems to restrain the other Ivorling, at least for a minute. “If ya can interrupt the runes on its surface, that’ll probably help deactivate it!” Astrid calls out, referring to the arcane sigils carved into the Ivorling.
She tosses her bag to the Beanies, and it lands haphazardly near them. “There’s tools an’ whatnot in there. If ya can’t get ‘em, just give me a minute! But– HRNGH!!” She grunts while shoving the Ivorling back again. “If ya got the one pinned, then might as well give it a shot!” While her larger hammer is pretty effective for damaging surfaces,[1] her smaller hammer is better suited for evil monsters. This is just a project gone wrong. Probably.
Hooking her smaller hammer back into her belt, Astrid pumps magic into her metal left arm. What might have appeared to simply be sleek, glowing armor before starts shifting and glowing a brighter blue. The plates of the arm rearrange themselves, emboldened with magic to make them stronger.[2] And then, she starts wailing on the Ivorling in front of her, trading blows with it while she works to damage the runes and interrupt the magic holding it together and giving it life.

The Beanies looked around for runes as they heard the girl shouting out to them. They hadn't the slightest idea what might count as a rune, but when in doubt, assume it's the glowy stuff. As far as the Beanies knew, magic seems to have a tendency to be glowing unless deliberately hidden, and they sure hoped that stereotype applied in Charon too. And of course the significant-looking symbols just had to be spread around the whole body. There's one right behind the Ivorling's head though, so they have a quick first course of action. "O' dear Gargoyle, please deface the symbol on the back of the head!" The trio then carefully hopped down the gargoyle, careful to avoid the Ivorling's frantic struggles to break free from the gargoyle's hold as they made their way to the bag to see if there was anything useful they could use. Lifting up the cover, they could see- Ooh is that a sleigh bell? The Beanies loved festivities, and the aesthetics looked similar to the decorations they had in their home world- Hey wait no that's not what they were there for! More rummaging happened and- Star snatched a dragon-shaped chocolate from Chili before they could take a bite. "(Chili-plush! Focus!)" Star snapped at their ever-gluttonous polar bear friend. Searching further, the Beanies would successfully find some tools![1] However, it was then that they would find a black box[2] that screamed 'gimmicky' in the plushies' whimsical imaginations. Being the curious little critters that they were, they'd get together, pile the tools over the top surface and heave the mystery container out. Just as they made their way out of the bag, a stray leg would just barely hit the box, the impact opening it up and unfurling a tool kit filled with tools you'd find in a smithy. Falling back into the bag, Star would notice a wrist-mounted crossbow that all but said 'use me'.
"(Goody-plush! Chili-plush!)" Star would call for their friends to pull it out, aimed it at the Ivorling and- off the grappling hook went and caught onto a groove along one of its forelegs, and Star would shout, "Gargoyle-plush! Grab!" An arm extended out to grab the crossbow, though its movements were beginning to dull. Oh dear. The Beanies were running out of time. And so the three bears would swiftly rush over to the scattered tools and get to defacing whatever they could before the gargoyle's magic ran out and it became mobile once more, managing to disable the strung fore leg and the opposite hind leg before the gargoyle rook became inert and the Ivorling would stand tall once more, threatening to introduce the same violence to the Beanies as it did Demony.

It doesn’t occur to Astrid that the three talking tiny soft constructs wouldn’t know what a rune is. To her, they should absolutely know what a rune is. But maybe they weren’t designed with all the knowledge of their maker, whoever that is. Astrid’s armor takes several blows as she fist fights the Ivorling that stands almost two feet taller than her. She’s not particularly good at hand-to-hand combat, but all she needs is a couple of lucky hits with her might.
Well-placed strikes at the center of magical rune combination renders the legs inert. With a great crash, the Ivorling falls to the ground, but it isn’t defeated yet. It slams its fist into Astrid’s leg in an attempt to sweep her, but her armor takes the hit[1] and her legs remain sturdy.[2] Finally with the big creature on the ground she can see its activation runes! Locking her fists together, Astrid smashes her hands onto it with all her might.[3] It cracks the surface, disrupting the magic, and finally shutting down the walking golem.
With heavy breaths, Astrid looks over at the situation with the Beanies and sees they’ve scattered things from her bag, including popping open the smithy within the halls, a merry fire lit in the forge that comes with it. Well, that probably wasn’t intentional. Still, they’ve managed to get the other one down, now to deactivate it! “Here! I’ll show ya the activation rune! We just gotta interrupt it!” Offering her expertise and her fists, Astrid points out the activation rune. If the Beanies want to ruin it and end this, they can. Otherwise, she will punch its lights out – literally.

Oh, so that's what an activation rune was! The Beanies are feeling rather sorry that they had to be taught that by a child (even if she was carrying herself pretty well so far, aside from the whole getting injured for their sakes in the process), but they can't know what they don't know. They'd resolve themselves to pay back this favour when all was said and done, but for now, they needed to figure out how to interrupt the activation rune sitting at the top of its tail. Much too high up for them and the grappling hook crossbow was all the way on the other side. It was then, though, that something mysterious happened. The wrist-mounted crossbow began to move on its own and fly its way to them as though driven by some kind of energy, stopping right in front of the three. The Beanies had no idea what was what, but they decided they should probably grab onto it. So they did with chisels placed around their other arms, and off they went, swung upwards in an arc towards the top of the tail and scraped into the activation rune hard with their chisels pointed forwards like jousting spears. The Ivorling, without its magic circulating, silently halted and collapsed to the ground with loud clashing sounds. The Beanies would be gently lowered to the ground, whereby they would see that Nemo had their arm extended towards the crossbow. They must have did some magic.[1] """Thanks Nemo!""" The Beanies would cheerfully voice out, before remembering about their gravely injured frenemy and frantically running towards it. "Ah, Demony!"The shadowy creature was seething at its weakness, and the blasted balls of cotton surviving yet another dangerous encounter completely unscathed. How are these bastards so darned lucky? Checking that Demony was alive and absolutely angry, the Beanies would hang their heads and hands downwards with their ears flapped forward and collectively chant """Sorry..."""Finally, they would remember the friendly stranger who helped them with the Ivorlings and rush over to her, bowing profusely as they jubilantly sung """Thanks miss!"""Not one to miss an opportunity for friendship (someone kind enough to help strangers can't be a bad person in the Beanies' eyes, after all), Star would then transition to their usual self-introduction. "I'm Star!" Star flapped their wings and jumped. "Goody!" Goody waved their right arm widely, leaning their body to their left as they did so. "Chili!" Chili did a 360° jig. Then Star would point at Demony and Nemo respectively, introducing the two as well. Demony loathed being introduced but its injuries meant it could do naught but rest, while Nemo would have nary a response to any of the drivel going on.
The three bears would then collectively eye the unfolded black box, which they surmised to be a portable smithy. The intricacies involved in storing everything nicely in a box reminded them of random thingamajigs they used to make. Maybe they should help her sort out the mess before anything else, though. "Um, we'll help clean up!" Goody offered.

With the last Ivorling dispatched, Astrid lets out a heavy breath. Her prosthetic reforms itself into proportions that more fit her person, and she looks around at the damage wrought by the errant golems. Well, that could have gone better, but she didn’t get here before the things started causing havoc. It would have been easier if they could have been taken back to where they belonged, but sometimes magic just does weird stuff.
Case in point, she doesn’t remember seeing any runes on the Beanies, and their existence is pretty odd to her. Astrid doesn’t have much brain power to think about it too hard right now though. “Good job,” she says with a tired but encouraging smile, the bruising on her face already starting to heal.[1]
The Beanies immediately rush for the strange shadowy entity that seems to be attached to them somehow, and it looks worse for wear. Astrid curiously follows them over to see what’s going on and is quickly introduced to the group. “Star, Goody, Chili, Demony, and Nemo…” she repeats. “Nice ta meet ya. I’m Astrid. There’s a lot a’ ya. Are ya all alright?” She can’t exactly tell what an injury for these odd creatures might look like, but Astrid decides to err on the side of caution.
Squatting down, Astrid looks at the group, and her words feel soothing, healing even, as she speaks.[2] “Ya did a good job takin’ on those Ivorlings,” she says. “Ain’t a lot a’ folks who’d jump in ta try that. Thanks fer the help.”
Taking a look at the now damaged Ivorlings, Astrid grimaces at them. “Aye, a bit a’ help cleanin’ up would be appreciated. I ain’t got any magic that’ll fix walls, but a bit a manual repairs ain’t so bad. Then I’ll drag these thin’s back ta where they belong.”

The Beanies look to each other, then at Nemo and Demony. The shadowy creature could feel its pain receding as this Astrid person spoke, enough that it could move again, resulting in a trio of happy cheery teddy bears hugging their shadowy frenemy out of relief, which shorts out whatever malice it would have held against the darned plushies. "We're okay!" Star replied cheerily. "Is Ms. Astrid okay?" Goody asked back with a slightly concerned look. The child certainly seemed alright, but it never hurts to check. Reds appeared on the trio's cheeks in response to being complemented like that, and they would all react in their own ways: Star would place their paws on their cheeks, Goody would put their arms and shrink slightly, while Chili would rub the back of their head. Nemo remained as blank as they were, while Demony had no face to speak of so there was nothing that could be assessed from there. "It's nothing compared to what Ms. Astrid did today!" Goody, ever the humble Beanie, praised their impromptu battle companion with all the genuineness they could muster. "Big golems scary. Maybe if they were edible..." Now out of imminent danger, Chili's brain was once again wandering towards food as they were wont to do. "Is that a prosthetic arm, Ms. Astrid? It looked super awesome!" Star had caught just an instant of it in action amidst the chaos, and the Beanies were pint-sized inventors at heart (literally!) ""Prosthetic arm?"" Goody and Chili were now equally curious, casting their attention to the arm Star was staring it.
"""Okay!""" The Beanies then got onto gathering onto all the scattered tools that flew out of the smithy and roughly placing them back where they should go, careful to avoid the scary fire while doing so, reel in that wrist-mounted crossbow they used, and return the rest of the tools into Astrid's bag. Nemo is seen magically moving whatever rubble they can using magic[1], while Demony brushed away the dust and little pebbles using its body. Soon, the mess would be largely relegated to the areas with broken walls, which was probably the best that the ragtag party could do.

“Good, glad yer alright,” Astrid says, standing upright upon seeing that the little bears’ spirits are far from broken. “Golems are only scary when they’re out a’ control.” Looking over her shoulder at the deactivated Ivorlings behind her, Astrid can’t help remembering the time that a very large construct went completely out of control in a very dangerous place and very nearly killed her and a friend. Now that dumb construct’s head acts as a head on a much better construct… Well, it would if she weren’t still busy properly rebuilding the golem.
“Huh?” Turning her arm over and looking at it for a second, Astrid looks at the Beanies again. “Aye, it’s a prosthetic. See?” With practiced ease, she reaches up to the shoulder, unclasps a couple of latches, and pulls the metal limb free of her body. The light cascading from between the metal plates dims, and she waves it around limply before reattaching it. Upon doing so, the magic returns to it, and it moves as naturally as a real arm would. “Made it with a friend a’ mine. Are ya interested in Arcanatek? Or tinkerin’? ‘Cause I got a place ya might fit in if so…”
A sly smile crosses her freckled face. That’s right, advertise your guild, Astrid. People can’t join if they don’t know about it.
Anyway, clean up! With the Beanies’ help, it makes gathering up the smaller objects pretty easy, and Astrid carefully folds up the smithy (which takes up at least half the width of the hall) into a box not much bigger than a typical toolbox. Once everything is tucked away, she dusts her hands off. “If yer interested in inventin’ an’ whatnot, come find me in Dragon’s Cradle. Sky Peak, ta be exact. There’s an old dwarven buildin’ near the bottom a’ the village I repurposed into a guild hall. Always lookin’ fer folks with some creative minds.”

"Wow~!" "Oooh~!" "Ahhhh~!" The easily impressed Beanies emanated excited wallas as their eyes gleamed with multiple shaky highlights that should not be logically possible based on how light physics work. """Arcanatek?""" The Beanies tilted their heads collectively, though they could roughly guess it's basically technology that runs on magic. They were Beanieventurers who have ventured into multiple worlds with all sorts of different laws governing the realities in them, after all, even if it was all done through the lens of a storybook and the lore rarely delved deep into the specifics. There was actually something else that told them so, but they would come no closer to realizing what it was. "Tinkering?" Star hopped up with arms raised in response. There may be somewhere for the technologically-inclined teddy bears after all! "We don't know magic though." And then they deflated quite quickly after, the other two also joining in on the collective depression. Then, the Beanies watched as the smithy unfolded back from its gargantuan (by their standards) to nothing more than a typical toolbox with unbridled awe that such a feat was even possible in Charon. "Dragon's Cradle, Sky Peak..." Star put one of their arms under their nose to signify that they were very much considering such an affair, even if they had zero knowledge of magic and couldn't even read words just yet. "We'll think about it! Thanks!" The Beanies all put on smiley eyes like the balls of positivity that they were. They'll figure something out, they always do! It was then that Goody felt a tug on their hat, [1] and they turned around in response. There, they could see Nemo beckoning their Beanienapping victims come over and pointing at their backpack they must have picked up at some point while the Beanies were interacting with Astrid. As though to provide a reason for the gesture, the sounds of loud bells would echo all around the space, chiming exactly six times before ending. They were already well into the evening, it seemed, and perhaps it was time that Nemo went home. And well, the Beanies and Demony were technically trespassing. "Oh, seems like we need to leave now." Goody looked at the Ivorlings, feeling a little guilty that they couldn't help with those. """Bye Ms. Astrid! Thanks again for everything today!""" The Beanies waved their arms, bowed, then turned around and traipsed towards Nemo's backpack to put on those safety harnesses and fancy clothes that they were wearing hours ago when they came in, with Demony in tow obediently slipping inside the backpack. Once all was said and done, Nemo would leave without even acknowledging their saviour while the Beanies would be as energetic as ever as they continued to wave goodbyes until they passed the door frame to another hallway.
